Teams Advancing to Round of 32

Mexico was the earliest to secure their spot on June 18. Along with United States and Argentina, they qualified quickly after only two group matches. The remaining 29 teams clinched their places by June 27, with Algeria and Austria completing the lineup.

How the Round of 32 Works

This stage switches to single-elimination matches. There’s no room for draws or points; each game must produce a winner. If the score is tied after 90 minutes, the match extends into 30 minutes of extra time. Should the deadlock persist, a penalty shootout decides the victor. Five players per team take shots from the penalty mark, and the side with more goals advances.

The pairings were predetermined based on group results, matching group winners against runners-up or top third-place teams in a set bracket.

Advancement Through the Tournament

The 48 teams started in the group stage divided into 14 groups of four. Each team plays three games against group opponents. Wins earn three points, draws one, and losses none. Tiebreakers include goal difference and goals scored.

The top two teams in each group, plus the eight best third-place teams, move on to the Round of 32, entering the knockout bracket. From there, victories lead to the Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and finally the championship match.
