Top Contenders for the 2026 World Cup Golden Ball

This summer, the world's best soccer players will gather in North America for the 2026 World Cup. The Golden Ball honors the tournament's best player, awarded since 1982. Interestingly, only four winners have also been part of the championship-winning team, showing that individual brilliance alone rarely leads to World Cup triumph.

Lionel Messi, who won both the Golden Ball and the World Cup in 2022, is among those who defied the trend. Just ten players have ever claimed the Golden Ball, and with Messi likely participating again, it’s uncertain if a new name will be added this time.

10. Bruno Fernandes

Portugal's Bruno Fernandes comes into the tournament after a strong Premier League season. Portugal has reached the semifinals twice but never the final. With Roberto Martínez coaching and a talented squad, they’re seen as dark horses. Cristiano Ronaldo remains the main scorer, but Fernandes is expected to be the creative force behind the team’s push.

9. Raphinha

Brazil’s Raphinha might be more of a goal threat than a Golden Ball favorite. Only two players have won both the Golden Boot and Golden Ball in the same World Cup. Despite scoring 62 goal contributions for Barcelona last season, Raphinha finished fifth in Ballon d’Or voting. Brazil’s long wait for World Cup glory may sway voters in his favor.

8. Vinicius Junior

Vinicius Junior has struggled to make a big impact for Brazil compared to his club performances. Neymar is unlikely to lead Brazil, so Vini Jr will carry the responsibility. Expectations are lower this time, which might work in Brazil’s favor. Whether he can step up remains to be seen.

7. Kylian Mbappé

Mbappé thrives on World Cup stages. He made his mark in 2018 and scored a hat-trick in the 2022 final. He matches Pelé’s scoring record and is close to breaking the all-time World Cup goal record. More often a finisher than a creator, Mbappé might be more suited to winning the Golden Boot than the Golden Ball.

6. Rayan Cherki

Manchester City’s Rayan Cherki is a dynamic playmaker known for moments of magic. While he may not dominate every game, his flashes could make him France’s X-factor. A crowded French squad means limited starts, but his talent could sway coach Didier Deschamps.

5. Ousmane Dembélé

The current Ballon d’Or winner, Dembélé aims to make a statement despite some fitness issues this season. With PSG chasing another Champions League title, he’s gaining form. Although international goals have been scarce, a fit Dembélé could shine and contend for the Golden Ball.

4. Lionel Messi

Messi’s participation in 2026 isn’t certain, but if he plays, he’s a top candidate for a third Golden Ball. His 2022 win crowned him the first multiple winner. Argentina can perform well without him, yet the team shapes itself around his strengths. Messi remains capable of world-class performances.

3. Harry Kane

Kane’s impact depends on his fitness. England’s top scorer and 2018 Golden Boot winner sometimes struggles in major tournaments. Bayern Munich’s busy schedule might affect him. Still, Kane is at the peak of his career, evolving into a creative striker, keeping him in the Golden Ball race.

2. Michael Olise

Olise, formerly with Crystal Palace, ranks high among potential Golden Ball winners. Alongside Kane, his World Cup showing might influence the Ballon d’Or race, especially if Bayern wins the Champions League. A graceful winger, Olise is expected to lead France’s attack from midfield, creating chances for stars like Mbappé and Dembélé.

1. Lamine Yamal

Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal could steal the spotlight in his first World Cup. Despite ups and downs this season, he’s finishing strong with Barcelona. Seen as one of the most promising young talents since Pelé, Yamal leads a talented Spain side that recently won the European Championship. It’s rare for teenagers to dominate the World Cup, but Yamal is no ordinary prospect.

We think the tournament could see either a seasoned star like Messi or a rising talent such as Yamal take home the Golden Ball.
