2026 World Cup Schedule, Results, Groups, and How to Watch

The qualifying playoffs have concluded, revealing the full roster of 48 teams competing in this summer's World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The draw placed 42 qualified teams into groups, while six more slots were reserved for playoff winners.

Hosts' Group Placements and Early Matches

United States, automatically qualified as a host, is in Group D. Their campaign began on June 12 with a victory over Paraguay. Upcoming matches include clashes against Australia and Türkiye.

Canada plays in Group B, kicking off with a draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Their group stage schedule features games versus Qatar and Switzerland.

Mexico had the honor of hosting the tournament's opening match, securing a 2-0 win against South Africa at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. They face Korea and Czechia next in Group A.

World Cup Format Details

The 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of four. Each team plays three matches within their group, aiming to qualify for the knockout rounds. Thirty-two teams will advance: the top two from each group and the eight best third-placed sides.

Ties are resolved by goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head results, fair play records, then drawing lots. FIFA introduced a new system to keep the highest-ranked teams apart until the semifinals if they progress through their groups. For instance, Spain and defending champions Argentina, ranked first and second respectively, are on opposite paths. Likewise, France (third) and England (fourth) will avoid meeting until late stages.

Teams from the same confederation cannot be grouped together, except European squads.
