How Third-Place Rankings Are Decided
The comparison shifts from within groups to across all 12 groups. FIFA ranks third-placed teams using points earned in all group games first. Then goal difference, goals scored, and disciplinary records come next. If teams still cannot be separated, their FIFA ranking breaks the tie. There will be no drawing of lots this time, as FIFA removed that option for 2026.
For example, Czechia currently holds the eighth qualifying spot only by scoring more goals than Ecuador, despite both having one point and a -1 goal difference. Should they end tied after the final group matches, fair play records and then FIFA rankings will decide who advances.
Potential Knockout Matches for Third-Place Qualifiers
The eight teams that make it through as the best third-placed finishers face group winners in the Round of 32. The specific pairings depend on which groups qualify third-placed teams from, with FIFA releasing all possible combinations ahead of time.

Some group winners like Mexico, USA, Germany, France, and Argentina have already secured their spots, but other groups are still undecided. These matchups will only be finalized once all group fixtures conclude on June 27.
Structure of the Knockout Stage
The new knockout phase begins with a Round of 32, something never seen before at a World Cup. It proceeds through Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and finishes with the final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The schedule is:
