Ajax Signs Yves Bissouma on Free Transfer
Ajax have ended Yves Bissouma’s spell in limbo, tying the Mali international to a contract at the Johan Cruijff ArenA until June 30, 2027.
The deal, which takes effect immediately, hands the 28-year-old a fresh stage in the Eredivisie after a bruising end to his Premier League stint. Once a dominant force at Brighton, Bissouma faded into the background at Tottenham, making just 11 appearances in his final season as doubts over his reliability mounted.
His time in London never truly settled. Disciplinary problems stalked his spell at Spurs, including a high-profile suspension two years ago after social media footage appeared to show him using nitrous oxide. The narrative around him shifted from midfield lynchpin-in-waiting to a player fighting his own reputation.
Now he arrives in Amsterdam with something to prove.
“I feel really happy. It means a lot, because Ajax is one of the biggest clubs in Europe. And for me to be part of the trip of this great club is something nice,” Bissouma said, clearly relishing the reset button Ajax have offered.
This was not a late, opportunistic swoop. Bissouma made it clear the move had been brewing for some time and that Ajax’s pitch hit home.
“Not really,” he replied when asked if the transfer surprised him. “Because I've spoken to a lot of people here beforehand. They told me about the project and that was very interesting to me. That's why I'm here. They just told me the project, what they really want to do this year and for the years that are coming as well.”
Ajax see more than a reclamation project. They see bite, experience and a player who has already lived at the sharp end of European football. In a squad that leans heavily on academy graduates, that matters.
The club’s recruitment team view Bissouma as a key piece to harden the midfield and give their younger talents a more rugged platform. The player himself did not shy away from the expectations.
“I’m a winner and then you want to win everything. That’s my desire and I’m ready to start,” he said, setting the bar high from day one.
He also spoke openly about embracing responsibility in a dressing room that regularly ushers teenagers into the spotlight.
“I'm just going to give them some advice, like how I see things and how I see football. Just to let them know I'm here for all of them, all of the youngest players. They can talk to me, we can have a very good conversation about anything,” he added.
Inside the club, this signing has been a long game rather than a quick fix.
Technical Director Jordi Cruijff revealed Ajax had been tracking Bissouma’s situation closely and moved early once it became clear he would leave Tottenham on a free.
“Discussions with Yves began in August and we are delighted that he has now signed for Ajax. We have brought in an experienced player who knows what it takes to perform at the highest level. He is capable of playing in several positions, and we hope he will be available for selection as soon as possible,” Cruijff said.
No transfer fee, a player with a point to prove, and a club desperate to reassert itself at home and in Europe. Ajax have rolled the dice on Bissouma’s edge and experience. The next question is simple: can he turn this second chance into the midfield dominance he once promised?
