"It's a difficult question because he has enormous quality and it's important to know if a player is convinced to be able to compete in his position. That's what I want to see from all my players," the German said when asked directly about Balde.
He didn’t stop there.
"Every day I see what the players do - the level - and if they show me that they have the level to play. In the end, we have to play as a team, only then will we have success. I need everyone to be one hundred percent."
For a young defender trying to re-establish himself after injury and inconsistency, the message was clear: prove it, or lose your place.
Flick’s challenge, Balde’s response
Later on Saturday, the narrative twisted again. Mundo Deportivo reported that Balde had taken Flick’s words as a challenge rather than an insult, and that he was prepared to stay at Barcelona and fight for his place.
The stance sounded defiant but conditional. If the club no longer wanted him, he would be ready to move on.
By Saturday night, the squad list for Elche arrived. Balde’s name wasn’t on it.
