Alejandro Balde's Future at Barcelona: Fight for a Place or Winter Sale?

Alejandro Balde has reached a hard stop in his Barcelona story. The next few months will say whether he fights his way back into Hansi Flick’s plans or becomes one of the club’s biggest winter sales.

The 22-year-old went into the summer knowing Barça were open to moving him on. Manchester United appeared as a serious option, the kind of move that can reset a young defender’s career. It never got off the ground. No agreement, no exit, and Balde stayed put at Camp Nou with a second chance he cannot afford to waste.

Flick wants more – and Balde knows it

This is not a simple battle for minutes. Flick has already made it clear internally that he expected more from the academy product. That stings for any La Masia graduate, especially one once tipped as the long-term answer at left-back.

So Balde is playing on two fronts: he has to win back game time and, just as importantly, change the staff’s view of his reliability. Every training session becomes an audition. Every cameo, a test of whether he can meet the physical and tactical demands Flick is setting for his full-backs.

He understands the brief. According to SPORT, Balde knows exactly what the coach wants from him and must now show, day after day, that he can hit Barcelona’s level again.

The problem? He is not alone in the queue.

A crowded left flank

Right now, Xavi Espart and Joao Cancelo sit ahead of him in the pecking order on the left. That is a brutal reality for a player who, not long ago, looked untouchable in that role.

Breaking back in will not be simple. Flick has alternatives he trusts, and Barcelona are chasing results, not experiments. If Balde cannot convince the staff quickly, his role shrinks. If his role shrinks, the January window suddenly looks very different.

Because while Balde is fighting for his place, the club are quietly doing their own calculations.

Cash asset or cornerstone?

Barcelona still see Balde as a valuable asset. His market value is estimated in the €30m–€40m range, a significant figure for a club that continues to juggle sporting needs with financial pressure.

If his situation does not improve by January, a sale becomes more than just a possibility. It becomes a lever. Offloading him would not only bring in money, it would also likely trigger a move for a specialist left-back.

That is where one name keeps resurfacing: Jorge Salinas.

The Salinas factor

Inside the club, Salinas is already viewed as one of the prime candidates if they decide to reinforce at left-back. Barcelona like his profile, see his upside, and have kept him firmly on their radar.

But Racing Santander have moved to protect their asset. They have raised the young defender’s release clause, a decision that could drive the price up and make any operation more complicated if Barça arrive at the table with fresh cash from a Balde sale.

So the equation is clear. The more expendable Balde looks, the more expensive Salinas could become.

For now, Barcelona can wait. There is no obligation to rush into a decision before January, and that breathing space probably suits everyone involved.

Balde still has time, age, physical power and strong market value on his side. Above all, he holds the only card that really matters in this debate: how he plays from now until winter.
