Alejandro Balde's Future at Barcelona: Decision Time

Alejandro Balde has reached the point of no return at Barcelona. The next few days will decide whether one of La Masia’s brightest recent products walks away from the club that shaped him.

The situation has escalated quickly. According to Spanish outlet "Marca", Balde’s agent, Jorge Mendes, flew into Barcelona this week for face-to-face talks. The Portuguese super-agent first met with the club’s sporting director, then sat down with Balde and Marc Casado to map out scenarios for both players. Casado’s exit has been expected for some time. Balde’s, until recently, had not.

That has changed. Fast.

Left out of the squad to face Elche, Balde watched from the outside as his teammates prepared without him. For a player of his status, that omission was not a routine technical decision. It read like a message. His future is now an open question.

Three formal offers are on the table. Manchester United are in the strongest position, with current indications pointing to the Premier League side as the leading candidate to sign the Spain international. Two other clubs remain in the race, but United have pushed hardest and are, for now, closest to an agreement.

Balde has not yet given a definitive answer. He is still weighing his options, aware that this decision could reshape his career. Barcelona, for their part, have to move from internal discussions to official negotiations with the interested clubs. His departure is not done, but the direction of travel is clear: the expectation inside the club is that a resolution will arrive in the coming days.

The odds of a U-turn feel slim. Balde’s absence against Elche speaks loudly, and the growing belief around the first team is that Joao Cancelo will inherit the starting left-back role. If Cancelo is locked in on that flank, the sporting logic for keeping Balde weakens, especially in a summer where every salary slot and transfer fee carries weight.

If the move goes through, Barcelona cannot afford to hesitate. They will need to react in the market, either by signing a new left-back or by reinforcing at centre-back, an area the club’s hierarchy has already identified as a long-standing priority. The back line is under review, and Balde’s situation only sharpens that focus.

There is still an internal path. Should Barcelona decide against entering the market for a full-back, Gerard Martin stands as the main in-house alternative on the left. With the transfer window closing in just nine days, promoting from within may prove the quickest, cleanest solution.
