Alex Mowatt Completes Move to Derby County
Derby County have finally got their man.
Alex Mowatt has completed a permanent move from West Bromwich Albion, signing a two-year deal after Derby struck a breakthrough in their long-running pursuit of the midfielder.
The 29-year-old completed his medical and the remaining paperwork today, joining for an undisclosed fee. Despite suggestions in the West Midlands that the price tag was close to £2m, DerbyshireLive understands the Rams have paid in the region of £600,000 for the former Barnsley captain, who was in the final year of his contract at The Hawthorns.
Long-term target lands in Derby
John Eustace has been chasing Mowatt for more than a year. The head coach wanted him through the door last summer, only for the midfielder to sign a two-year contract extension at West Brom instead.
Derby never dropped the trail. They kept tabs on his situation, waited for the right moment, and have now moved decisively to add a player with a hefty bank of Championship know-how.
Mowatt brings exactly that. Years in the second tier, a reputation for dictating games from deep, and the ability to build attacks from the base of midfield are understood to be central to why Derby pushed so hard to get this deal over the line.
A career built in the Championship
Doncaster-born Mowatt has spent the last five years at The Hawthorns, during which time he also enjoyed a loan spell at Middlesbrough, helping them to a fourth-place finish in the Championship.
He has already featured for Albion this season, starting in their 4-1 Carabao Cup win at Rotherham United and playing 73 minutes before being replaced by Conor Townsend. That outing now looks like one of his last acts in a West Brom shirt.
Before his West Brom move, Mowatt came through the Leeds United academy, breaking into the first team at Elland Road and establishing himself as a technically assured midfielder with a powerful left foot. His performances at youth level earned him caps for England under-19s and under-20s.
The real surge in his reputation came at Barnsley. After joining from Leeds and later taking the armband, he captained the Tykes to the Championship play-offs in 2021 and racked up more than 140 appearances for the club. His set-piece threat and long-range shooting became a hallmark of that Barnsley side.
He also spent time on loan at Oxford United, sharpening his game in League One before returning to make his mark higher up the pyramid.
West Brom praise, Derby’s gain
When Valerien Ismaël brought Mowatt to West Brom on a free transfer, the then-Baggies boss was effusive in his assessment.
“He is an outstanding midfield player with outstanding qualities and mentality. He scores goals outside the box and on set-pieces he is very dangerous.
“He is a hard worker with the right mentality and a lot of energy. The way Alex plays will suit the West Brom mentality."
Those qualities now belong to Derby.
A proven Championship operator, a set-piece specialist, a leader who has worn the armband in the play-offs — Mowatt arrives as more than just another body in midfield. He comes as a statement that Derby intend to build a side ready to live in the Championship’s demanding rhythm and, crucially, shape it.
