Álvarez Rejects Man City and Arsenal for Barcelona
Julián Álvarez has flatly rejected the chance to make a dramatic return to Etihad Stadium, turning down Manchester City before the Premier League champions could even put an official offer on the table, according to Cadena SER.
City contacted Atletico Madrid to explore re-signing their former striker, but the answer from the 26-year-old was immediate and emphatic: no return to Manchester.
Locked in a three-way deadlock
Álvarez’s stance drops another twist into what has become the defining transfer saga of the summer. He is embroiled in a tense standoff with Atletico, wanted desperately by Arsenal, and yet fixated on only one destination: Barcelona.
Arsenal have pushed hard. He is their priority, their “dream” centre-forward for this window, and they have approached him repeatedly. Each time, Álvarez has turned them down.
He does not want London. He does not want Manchester. He wants Barcelona.
Barcelona already tested Atletico’s resolve earlier in the window with a €100million (£86m) bid, which was rejected. This week, club president Joan Laporta went public, confirming their interest and openly stating that it is “common knowledge” the Argentine forward wants to join them.
The player’s intentions could not be clearer. The problem is his club.
Atletico’s hard line
Atletico have drawn a red line. The Madrid side have told Barcelona there is “zero per cent chance” of selling Álvarez to a direct Liga rival, reiterating that stance again this week.
So the picture is stark. The only club Álvarez truly wants will not be allowed to sign him. The only English club that can realistically take him, Arsenal, keeps getting the same answer. And the club that made him a Treble winner, Manchester City, have been firmly rebuffed.
The standstill is total.
Personal reasons behind England refusal
Álvarez’s resistance to a Premier League return is not rooted in football. The report states that his reluctance is driven by personal circumstances, particularly UK visa regulations that would make it significantly harder for his family to visit him regularly.
In Spain, those complications disappear. Life off the pitch, for him and those closest to him, is simpler. That matters to him now more than another crack at English football.
It marks a notable shift from his first spell in the country. City signed him from River Plate for £14m in January 2022, and he quickly became a key piece in Pep Guardiola’s squad. He scored 36 goals in 103 appearances and helped deliver a historic Treble before Atletico paid £82m to take him to Madrid two summers ago.
Now, the league where he once thrived is the one he is determined to avoid.
Trapped between desire and reality
Cadena SER report that Álvarez has been repeatedly reminded that, given Atletico’s refusal to deal with Barcelona, Arsenal effectively represent his only realistic escape route from the Wanda Metropolitano this summer.
Still, he is holding his line. He wants to stay in Spain and keep pushing for Barcelona.
That leaves him in a brutal position: a club that will not sell him to the team he wants, and a player who will not accept the market’s most viable alternative in England.
City have been turned away. Atletico will not pick up the phone to Barca. Arsenal’s interest has hit a wall.
For Álvarez, the clock is ticking. He must now decide whether to repair a strained relationship in Madrid and commit to Atletico’s project, or cling to the hope that something breaks before the window slams shut.
