Amit Bhatia Joins Liverpool as Vice-Chairman

A new power figure will be in the Anfield directors’ box on Saturday – and he will not be hiding in the background.

Amit Bhatia, Liverpool’s new vice-chairman, is expected to attend the club’s first home game of the Premier League season when Andoni Iraola’s side face Nottingham Forest. It will be the first public glimpse of the man fronting the most significant change to the club’s ownership structure since Fenway Sports Group (FSG) arrived.

Bhatia, 46, only left QPR last month after an 18-year spell as co-owner and director. He has wasted no time stepping back into the heart of English football. Now leading 1892 Holdings, the consortium that has bought around 38 per cent of Liverpool from FSG in a deal worth just over £2bn, he moves from Loftus Road to one of the global game’s most scrutinised stages.

This is not a silent investment. Based in London and already installed as vice-chairman, Bhatia is expected to be a regular, visible presence at Anfield, far more so than some of his heavyweight partners or FSG’s more distant figures.

Those partners are eye-catching in their own right. The 1892 Holdings group includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, both billionaires operating from very different corners of the world. Bezos is based in the United States, Saverin in Singapore, underscoring how global Liverpool’s investor base has become.

The shake-up will also reshape the club’s boardroom. Bhatia will take a seat on an expanded Liverpool board alongside Elaine Saverin, wife of Eduardo, and Bryan Baum. Baum is representing Bezos through K5 Sports, the venture capital firm he founded, giving the American tycoon a formal voice in the club’s governance even if he is not expected to be a weekly visitor to Merseyside.

For all the fanfare, the deal is not completely over the line. It remains subject to sign-off from the new Independent Football Regulator, the body created to oversee ownership and financial stability in the English game, and all involved must still pass the Premier League’s owners’ and directors’ test. Only once those hurdles are cleared will 1892 Holdings’ stake be fully locked in.

When FSG confirmed that a minority share had been sold, Bhatia’s words made clear how he views the scale of the move.

“We are incredibly proud to be investing in Liverpool Football Club and to be doing so alongside FSG,” he said. “We have the utmost respect and admiration for FSG as owners and for everything they have achieved at Anfield. To be welcomed as a partner in a club of this stature is a huge privilege.

“We are making this investment because we believe deeply in Liverpool and its leadership, and we look forward to supporting the club's continued success for years to come.”

On Saturday, belief becomes presence. As the Kop roars in a new season, Liverpool’s future power structure will be watching from just a few yards away, already shaping what comes next.
