Arbeloa Strengthens Fulham with Key Signings Angel and Larsson
Alvaro Arbeloa has gone back to what he knows best. After a bruising start to life in the Premier League with two defeats from two, the Fulham head coach has returned to Valdebebas and raided Real Madrid again.
Having already brought in Shea Charles and Madrid duo Gonzalo Garcia and Cesar Palacios, Arbeloa has now secured 22-year-old midfielder Angel, a player he knows inside out from their time together in the Spanish giants’ academy.
Arbeloa’s captain, now Arbeloa’s cornerstone
Angel arrives on a three-year contract with an option for a further 12 months, underlining how central Fulham expect him to become. At Real Madrid Castilla, Arbeloa made him captain. When both were promoted mid-season, the coach trusted him again, handing the midfielder his senior debut.
Angel responded by forcing his way into Carlo Ancelotti’s rotation, making four La Liga appearances and tasting the Champions League stage. Now he follows Arbeloa to England, this time as a key piece rather than a hopeful youngster.
“I’ve known him for many years from the Real Madrid youth academy, and he’s a coach who brings out the best in players, gets the most out of each one and, most importantly, understands them," Angel said of Arbeloa. "Now, he’s going to be coaching me at a higher level, and I must give him the same intensity and commitment – or even more – than ever before.”
The move is structured as an initial one-year loan, with Standard Sport reporting that Fulham will make the deal permanent for £18.3 million. The club have already confirmed he will then sign a long-term contract.
A new midfield era
Angel’s arrival follows another significant piece of business. Fulham have also added Larsson, a Swedish league and cup winner with Malmo, who brings pedigree and versatility to the middle of the park.
The 22-year-old Swede effectively steps into the void left by Sasa Lukic, who departed for Ipswich Town on a permanent deal earlier in the summer. Fulham lose a seasoned operator but gain a young champion used to pressure and expectation.
“It’s a very proud moment for me and my family – I’m honoured to be here,” Larsson said after signing his contract, underlining the scale of the move in his career.
Between Angel’s technical schooling at Real Madrid and Larsson’s winning background in Sweden, Arbeloa is reshaping Fulham’s midfield with youth, energy and a clear identity rooted in his own football education.
Both new signings will now race the clock to be ready for the weekend, when the Cottagers host Crystal Palace at Craven Cottage. After a stuttering start, Fulham’s season already feels at a crossroads. Are these the signings that kick-start Arbeloa’s project, or the first big test of it?
