Arbeloa Confirms Real Madrid Exit as Mourinho Returns
Alvaro Arbeloa stood behind the microphone, smiled slightly, and made it clear.
"Yes."
With that single word at his press conference, the interim Real Madrid coach confirmed he will not be on the bench next season, as the club edges closer to a reunion with Jose Mourinho.
On Saturday, Los Blancos host Athletic Bilbao at the Santiago Bernabeu in their final La Liga game of a turbulent campaign. For Arbeloa, it will be more than just the season’s last whistle. It will mark the end of a brief, intense spell in charge of the club he calls home.
Florentino Perez turned to Arbeloa in January, handing him the reins after Xabi Alonso’s departure. Now, the president is poised to change direction again, with Portuguese veteran Mourinho widely expected to take over.
Arbeloa left no room for doubt about one thing: if Mourinho returns, they will not be working together.
"Mou has a fantastic technical team, he's got good people around him, if he comes to Madrid he will come with his team," Arbeloa said. "There's no chance that I would be with him. Then, my future... from Monday I'll think about that."
It was blunt, honest, and tinged with uncertainty. His next step can wait. First comes one more match at the Bernabeu.
Arbeloa’s relationship with Real Madrid runs deep. He played for the club between 2009 and 2016, then came back to coach at youth level before being thrust into the senior role mid-season. This, he insisted, does not feel like a farewell.
"I hope it's a see you later... I've always considered this my home, I've belonged to Madrid for 20 years in various roles," he said.
That bond made his next admission all the more poignant.
"It will be my last game this season as coach of Real Madrid, I don't know if it will be the last game of my life as coach of Real Madrid. We never know. I'll try and enjoy it and try to get the win."
One more game. One more team talk. One more walk down the touchline at the Bernabeu, before the club turns back to Mourinho and Arbeloa steps into an uncertain Monday.
