Arsenal's Bold Move for Julian Alvarez: Gyokeres on the Table
Arsenal are ready to gamble big on their search for a killer No.9 – and Viktor Gyokeres could be the collateral.
Mikel Arteta’s side, still chasing the final piece of a title-winning puzzle that can also conquer Europe, are reportedly preparing a bold swap proposal to land Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid before the transfer window slams shut.
Arsenal push hard for Alvarez
Alvarez remains Arteta’s preferred target up front, even with continued links to Galatasaray forward Victor Osimhen in the background. The Arsenal manager wants a striker who can turn tight games and elevate an already stacked squad into serial Champions League contenders.
Gyokeres, signed from Sporting for £55 million just last summer, hit 21 goals in all competitions last season. Impressive numbers. But inside the Emirates, the feeling is that they still need a more ruthless, all-round presence to sit at the tip of Arteta’s attack.
That is where Alvarez comes in.
The Argentine forward has made it clear that Barcelona is his preferred next move. The problem? Atletico have no interest in strengthening a direct LaLiga rival, and Barca’s financial issues make a £100m-plus deal extremely complicated.
So the door swings open for Arsenal.
Transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano has already revealed that talks over a potential deal have taken place in London. Now, according to Spanish outlet Diario Sport, Arsenal have raised the stakes with a formal swap proposal.
Gyokeres on the table
The report claims the reigning Premier League champions are willing to include Gyokeres in a package to tempt Atletico into doing business. Arsenal are said to be prepared to offer £68.5m plus the Sweden international in exchange for Alvarez.
One season after his arrival, Gyokeres could be on the move again.
Diario Sport suggest that Alvarez’s “head has turned” towards the Emirates Stadium, influenced by Atletico’s stance on not selling to Barcelona even if the Catalans somehow found the money.
Financially, there is no major obstacle in this scenario. Both clubs could structure a deal, and Alvarez is expected to double his wages if the transfer goes through.
For Arsenal, it would be a statement. For Atletico, it would mean sacrificing a key forward but gaining a proven scorer and a hefty fee.
‘That little bit of magic up front’
Alvarez’s potential impact on this Arsenal side was underlined after their commanding 3-0 win over Coventry in their Premier League opener on Friday night.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Gary Neville did not hide how transformative he believes the move could be.
“We think that Alvarez wants to go to Barcelona, but if Arsenal could get Alvarez somehow that is going to light this place up, because then you have a world class striker to go with all the other world class defenders and midfield players,” he said.
“They’d become not just Premier League title winners, but you’re then thinking that they can go that extra step and win the Champions League as well.
“He does need that little bit of magic up front that when you don’t play well they’ll go and win a big game for you.
“Has he got enough of that? I’m not sure.”
That doubt lingers over Alvarez’s absolute elite ceiling, but the upside is clear. For Arteta, the attraction is obvious: a versatile, pressing forward with pedigree at the highest level, and still with room to grow.
What comes next?
Arsenal return to Premier League action on August 31 when they travel to Aston Villa, where Ezri Konsa is set to face his former club. By then, the transfer window will be on the brink of closing.
