Arsenal Faces Key Decision on Zubimendi Amid Madrid Interest

Arsenal are staring at one of the defining calls of their summer – and Real Madrid know it.

Los Blancos have reignited their pursuit of Spanish international midfielder Zubimendi in the final stretch of the window, sensing a rare opening to prise a title‑winning lynchpin away from north London.

Mourinho’s green light, Madrid’s big play

TEAMtalk report that Jose Mourinho has given a firm green light to the move. The Portuguese coach views the 27-year-old as the ideal anchor to tighten his midfield, a ready-made solution rather than a long-term project.

Initial contact has already been made over what would be a blockbuster transfer. Zubimendi’s camp, for their part, are understood to have indicated that the player is highly interested in the chance to join Madrid and return to Spain at the peak of his career.

Madrid believe that combination – a player open to the move and a squad suddenly crowded at Arsenal – has created an unexpected chance. They missed out on Rodri and are determined not to watch another elite holding midfielder slip away.

Arteta’s dilemma

Arsenal are not actively looking to move Zubimendi on. But they are listening.

Reports suggest the club would seriously consider a proposal they deem “right” for a player who only arrived last season. The Sun, however, paint a tougher stance: Mikel Arteta is said to be desperate to keep him, with only a truly exceptional offer capable of shifting that position.

That’s where the tension lies. If Zubimendi pushes hard for a lucrative return to Spain and the prestige of Madrid, Arteta faces a brutal decision in the coming weeks – back his squad depth and cash in, or hold firm and risk a disgruntled key man.

From title pillar to rotation risk

Zubimendi was central to Arsenal’s stunning Premier League title triumph last season, knitting play together and giving the side balance in big moments. He arrived, settled, and delivered.

Now his place is no longer guaranteed.

The £75 million signing of Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United has reshaped the midfield hierarchy. Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Mikel Merino and Guimaraes are all jostling for minutes in the middle of the pitch. It is a luxury problem for Arteta, but a problem all the same.

Letting an experienced World Cup winner leave after just one season, though, would be a huge roll of the dice for a side trying to stay at the very top. Depth wins trophies. Arsenal know that better than most after last year’s run.

Madrid’s need, Arsenal’s leverage

Madrid’s renewed interest is no coincidence. After failing to land Rodri, Mourinho wants greater authority and control in the centre of the park. Zubimendi fits that brief perfectly, and his importance to their plans could grow further if Eduardo Camavinga leaves the Santiago Bernabeu.

Arsenal, however, hold all the cards financially. Zubimendi is on a lucrative long-term contract, and there is no pressure on the club to accept anything that looks like a compromise bid.

They are defending a Premier League crown and hunting Champions League glory at the same time. Offloading a core squad member simply because competition has intensified would run against everything that level of ambition demands.

Madrid, then, know the score. To even bring Arsenal to the table, they will need an offer that dwarfs the Gunners’ original outlay and reflects Zubimendi’s status as a title-winning starter.

Until that lands – if it ever does – Arsenal’s priority is clear: keep hold of a midfielder who helped take them to the summit. The question now is whether Madrid, and Zubimendi himself, are willing to push hard enough to change that.
