Arsenal’s Left Winger Search Hits Dead End with Ngumoha
Arsenal’s hunt for a new left winger looks set to hit another dead end. Rio Ngumoha, the Liverpool teenager who has been firmly on their radar, is moving towards committing his long-term future to Anfield.
The Premier League champions have been scouring the market for a wide player for 2027 after failed moves for Morgan Rogers and Vinicius Junior in the summer. Gabriel Martinelli departed, no like-for-like replacement arrived, and the gap on the left has lingered ever since.
David Ornstein has already hinted that Arsenal “could see something happening” in January, a nod to the club’s intent to address that vacancy. Ngumoha, 18, quickly emerged as one of the most appealing options: young, explosive, and already trusted at elite level.
Liverpool, though, moved first — and hard.
Liverpool close in on new Ngumoha deal
TEAMtalk revealed earlier this month that Liverpool and Ngumoha’s camp had reached an agreement in principle over a lucrative new contract. The framework is there; the fine print is now being worked through.
Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke reports that those talks are progressing smoothly and that no major obstacles are expected. The message from Liverpool is clear: they want him starting regularly this season and see him as a pillar of their next cycle.
“Liverpool are desperate to keep hold of Ngumoha,” O’Rourke said, adding that the player is happy at the club and buying into the pathway laid out for him. Both sides, he suggests, are optimistic of getting the deal signed.
That pathway matters. Liverpool are offering minutes, responsibility and a defined role. For a teenager of Ngumoha’s profile, that kind of clarity can be worth more than any outside pitch.
For Arsenal, it all points in one direction: another left-wing target slipping away.
Liverpool shut the door – for now
Fabrizio Romano has echoed the same theme. He reported that even at the height of summer speculation, when Bayern Munich and other clubs circled, Liverpool’s stance never wavered: Ngumoha was not leaving, not for sale, not up for negotiation.
“Rio is Liverpool’s future,” Romano underlined. Interest from elsewhere was inevitable, he said, because Ngumoha is regarded as one of the standout talents in his position. But Liverpool never opened the door.
Now Arsenal are the latest name linked, their interest fuelled by the fact they never brought in a direct successor to Martinelli. They reshaped the squad, replaced Leandro Trossard with Christos Tzolis, then chose to stick with what they had on the left.
That hasn’t stopped them watching. Arsenal “always look at opportunities,” Romano noted, and if an opening to sign Ngumoha arises in 2027, 2028 or beyond, they would be among the clubs ready to move. So would several leading sides from abroad.
For the moment, though, that remains hypothetical.
Liverpool are actively working on a new contract, holding ongoing conversations with Ngumoha over guarantees, role, and the balance of the deal. The club want commitment; the player wants assurances. Both sides know the stakes.
There will be strong interest in Rio Ngumoha. That much is certain. But right now, all roads lead back to Anfield — and Arsenal look destined to keep searching for their answer on the left.
