Arsenal's Noni Madueke Injury Update Ahead of Manchester City Clash

Arsenal have been given the slice of good news they badly needed before their biggest domestic test of the season. According to reports, the club are optimistic Noni Madueke will be fit for Sunday’s title-shaping trip to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, easing fears of a major setback just as the pressure peaks.

The 24-year-old limped off shortly after the hour mark in Wednesday night’s tense 0-0 draw with Sporting, a result that booked Arsenal’s place in the Champions League semi-finals but left Mikel Arteta with a new worry. Madueke, grimacing and clutching his right knee after a heavy challenge from Pedro Goncalves, stayed down long enough to drain the noise from the Emirates.

He tried to continue. He couldn’t.

After on-pitch treatment, he was withdrawn and replaced by teenager Max Dowman, a substitution that felt as much about damage limitation for the season as it was about the game itself. With Arsenal walking a tightrope in both Europe and the Premier League, the sight of one of their most dynamic wide players hobbling off came at the worst possible time.

Inside the club, the initial mood was anxious. A serious knee problem at this stage would have shredded Arteta’s plans for the run-in. Instead, the early medical assessment has brought a measure of calm. The winger is believed to have avoided structural damage and is dealing with a dead leg – painful, limiting, but usually short term.

For Arsenal, that distinction changes everything.

Madueke’s knees have already shaped too much of his season. Last month, he hurt his left knee on international duty with England during a 1-1 draw with Uruguay, leaving Wembley in a protective brace and sparking fears of a lengthy lay-off. He recovered quickly then, and the club will hope this latest scare follows the same pattern.

The timing could hardly be more critical. Arsenal have not won at the Etihad in 11 years. Every trip there in the league has carried a sense of dread; this one carries the weight of a title race. City sit just behind them, poised and patient. If Pep Guardiola’s side claim victory on Sunday, they would haul the gap at the top back to three points with a game in hand. That’s not just pressure. That’s a potential swing in the entire narrative of the season.

Arteta knows he needs his best wide players for a stadium where City stretch opponents to breaking point. That’s why Madueke’s availability matters even more with Bukayo Saka still wrestling with an Achilles issue. Saka’s involvement against City remains uncertain, a cloud that refuses to clear. If he cannot start, or even if he can only manage limited minutes, Madueke’s role on the right flank becomes central to Arsenal’s tactical plan – both as an outlet on the break and as a pressing trigger high up the pitch.

The forward line, then, is a puzzle with missing pieces.

At the other end of the pitch, there is at least a hint of light.

Defensive reinforcements are edging closer. Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori, both deep into their rehabilitation, were spotted in the stands at the Emirates on Wednesday night, watching and waiting. Their presence was more than symbolic. It underlined the possibility that Arsenal’s back line could soon regain depth and versatility, crucial assets against a City side that punishes any weakness.

Their potential return would be a significant psychological lift for a squad already stretched by the absence of captain Martin Odegaard, sidelined with a persistent knee problem. Lose your captain, your creative heartbeat, and one of your primary wide threats, and any title challenge starts to wobble. Arsenal are trying to keep theirs upright while the medical team races the clock.

The next 48 hours will be restless ones for Arteta. Assessments, scans, consultations – all feeding into one simple question: who is fit enough to board the plane to Manchester?

Madueke’s situation, at least, offers cautious encouragement rather than outright alarm. In a season decided by fine margins, even that small victory in the treatment room could echo loudly at the Etihad.
