Arsenal's Pursuit of Julián Álvarez: Will He Choose Barcelona?

Arsenal refuse to give up on Julián Álvarez – even as the forward dreams of Barcelona.

The Premier League champions have tracked the Argentine all summer, pushing hard to bring him back to England. FourFourTwo understands, though, that Álvarez’s own preference has been clear: stay in La Liga and wait for Barça.

Spain, however, is telling a slightly different story.

Arsenal back in the frame

Reports from Spain insist the move to north London is very much alive. According to Sport, “Julián Álvarez’s future will be decided in the coming hours, and all signs point to England,” with Atlético Madrid said to be actively steering the striker towards N5 rather than a different destination.

Álvarez has already made his stance on a transfer clear this summer. The 26-year-old admitted that “the best thing for everyone is a transfer and I want to fulfil my dream,” after Real Madrid reportedly saw a £129 million bid knocked back by Atlético.

Since then, Mikel Arteta has personally called Álvarez in an attempt to sell the Arsenal project. For now, the indication remains that the former Manchester City forward has his heart set on Barcelona. The tug of war continues.

Atlético in London, Arsenal watching closely

There is another twist. Atlético sporting director Mateu Alemany is currently in London to negotiate with Chelsea over striker Nicolas Jackson. Sport Witness report that Álvarez’s name could also be on the agenda while Alemany is in the capital, with Arsenal ready to explore every angle.

Arsenal’s role in this late-window drama might not end there. Viktor Gyökeres has now been linked with Barça, while Gabriel Jesus is also believed to be on the Catalan club’s shortlist. That could drag the Gunners into a wider striker carousel, even as Arteta is understood to be braced for the possibility of not signing a new forward at all this summer.

Big offer on the table

The scale of Arsenal’s push is clear. Sport Witness relay claims from Spain that Arsenal have put forward an offer of “€80m plus Viktor Gyökeres” for Álvarez, with the player able to “double his salary at the Emirates and have a key role under Mikel Arteta.”

That kind of package would make Álvarez central to Arsenal’s attack. He could replace Gabriel Martinelli on the left, or operate through the middle as competition – or even an alternative – to Kai Havertz. How Arsenal line up depends heavily on who departs London Colney over the coming weeks.

Moving pieces in attack

There is movement – and resistance – elsewhere in the forward line. Martinelli has reportedly rejected an approach from Galatasaray, signalling he is in no rush to leave north London. Arsenal are also said to hold an interest in Victor Osimhen, though that remains one of the market’s most complex and expensive potential deals.

Other avenues have already closed. The Gunners are not involved in the chase for Bradley Barcola. Attempts to prise Vinícius Jr from Real Madrid and Morgan Rogers from their clubs have collapsed: Vinícius opted to extend his stay in Madrid, while Rogers chose Chelsea in a British record transfer.

So Arsenal wait. The offer is there, the salary is there, the role is there.

The question is whether Julián Álvarez is willing to trade his Barcelona dream for a leading part in Arteta’s title defence.
