Arsenal's Late Push for Rashford Denied by United Star

Arsenal’s scramble for a new left winger has run straight into Marcus Rashford’s decision to stay put at Manchester United.

With Gabriel Martinelli gone to Al-Hilal and the window closing on Tuesday night, Arsenal sounded out a surprise late loan for Rashford, according to the Evening Standard. The move was explored separately to their ongoing push for Julian Alvarez, a parallel track rather than a Plan B.

Rashford’s answer was simple: no.

At one stage this summer, a permanent exit from Old Trafford looked almost certain. After spending last season on loan at Barcelona and Aston Villa, the forward had appeared to be edging towards a clean break from United. He wanted Barcelona again. The Catalan club had a £26 million release clause sitting there, ready to be triggered.

They walked away.

Barcelona chose to reshape their attack with Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi instead, leaving Rashford’s route back to Spain blocked. That decision opened the door to other suitors, and one heavyweight in particular stepped through.

The Times reports that Fenerbahce made a serious push, seeing Rashford as the marquee signing to headline their Champions League campaign. They were prepared to build their summer story around him. Rashford shut that down as well, making it clear he had no appetite for a move to the Super Lig.

Those rejections have shifted the mood at Manchester United. A player who once seemed destined to leave is now being folded back into the squad. United, aware that his £325,000-a-week wages dramatically shrink the market of clubs who can realistically take him on permanently, are content to keep their academy product and reset the relationship.

The key to that reset is Michael Carrick.

The bond between head coach and forward has become the central reason for Rashford’s U-turn. He returned to the pitch in the defeat to Hull City, coming on at half-time for Patrick Dorgu, a low-key reintroduction but a significant one inside the camp.

Carrick has liked what he has seen away from the cameras. Speaking about Rashford’s attitude since rejoining the group, the manager said: "It's been pretty obvious since Marcus came back training with Kobbie [Mainoo] and Licha [Martinez] pretty much in Dublin that he's come back fantastically well, you know." That endorsement has effectively dragged Rashford back into the inner circle, restoring his place in the first-team environment.

While United close ranks around one of their own, Arsenal are left racing the clock. Martinelli’s departure has blown a hole in Mikel Arteta’s options on the left, and the club now need to find a replacement at speed with the deadline looming on Tuesday night. Rashford will not be that man.

His focus instead turns to Old Trafford. United host Ipswich Town on Sunday, and Rashford is targeting involvement in what would be a landmark outing: his first appearance at the stadium since December 2024.
