Arsenal Sign Ezri Konsa in £50m-Plus Deal
Arsenal have finally got their man.
Ezri Konsa is heading to the Emirates after the club struck a £50m-plus deal with Aston Villa, a move Fabrizio Romano has branded the completion of the Gunners’ “top target” in defence this summer.
Arsenal land Konsa in £50m-plus deal
With William Saliba sidelined by a back problem and Jurrien Timber out with a groin injury, Mikel Arteta pushed hard for a defender who could cover both centre-back and right-back. Arsenal wanted experience, reliability, and someone ready to slot straight into a side chasing major honours now, not later.
Konsa ticks every box.
Romano confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that Arsenal and Villa have agreed a fee in the region of £50m plus add-ons, with a long-term contract in place for the England international. The Athletic went slightly higher on the numbers, reporting a £51m base fee plus bonuses, and stated that Konsa, 28, will complete his medical on Thursday.
The medical is expected within 48 hours, after which Konsa will sign and be unveiled as the latest piece of Arteta’s increasingly stacked squad.
He arrives with a strong pedigree. Konsa has been Aston Villa’s standout defender for several seasons, a cornerstone of Unai Emery’s back line, and he enhanced his reputation on the biggest stage with impressive performances for England at the World Cup. For a club that has shifted into clear “win-now” mode, this is the profile Arsenal wanted: Premier League-proven, international-level, and versatile.
A busy summer, and a clear plan
Konsa becomes Arsenal’s fifth first-team addition of the window, joining a list that underlines how targeted this rebuild has been.
- Illan Meslier has come in to provide competition and cover in goal.
- Piero Hincapie’s loan has been made permanent to bolster the left side of defence.
- Bruno Guimaraes has arrived to add power and control in midfield.
- Christos Tzolis has been signed as the direct replacement for Leandro Trossard on the left wing.
Arsenal are not done there. The club still want a higher-calibre centre-forward, and an even more high-profile left winger remains on the agenda. If that winger arrives, Gabriel Martinelli will be given the green light to leave, a significant potential shift in the attacking hierarchy.
But the immediate priority was always to reinforce the back line. With Saliba and Timber out, the margin for error in defence had shrunk. Konsa’s arrival restores that depth and gives Arteta options across the right side of his back four.
The one that got away
Romano has repeatedly described Konsa as Arsenal’s main defensive target this summer, yet the Gunners did test the market elsewhere before closing in on the Villa man.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano revealed that Arsenal made an attempt to sign Marc Pubill from Atletico Madrid in recent weeks. The interest was serious. The response from Spain was not.
Atletico simply refused to engage. No talks, no negotiations, no opening. Pubill is staying put, and with that route completely blocked, Arsenal moved decisively for Konsa.
The switch in focus has left them with a defender ready to start immediately in the Premier League and the Champions League, rather than a longer-term project. For a squad already shaped to challenge on all fronts, that choice feels deliberate.
Arsenal now have their defensive cornerstone in place. The question is simple: with Konsa secured and more attacking firepower still on the shopping list, how far can this squad be pushed in the coming season?
