Arsenal Sign Ezri Konsa as First Defensive Move of Summer
Arsenal have gone to Aston Villa for their first defensive signing of the window, bringing in England international Ezri Konsa on a long-term deal.
The 28-year-old, confirmed by the club’s official channels, arrives in north London after seven seasons at Villa Park, where he became a pillar of Unai Emery’s back line and one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders. More than 200 appearances across all competitions tell the story of a player who rarely missed a beat.
This is not a late bloomer suddenly catching fire. Konsa’s rise has been steady, almost methodical.
He first emerged at Charlton Athletic, breaking into the senior side in 2016 and quickly standing out as one of the club’s most promising young defenders. Two full seasons of senior football hardened him, and by 2018 his form had earned him a move to Brentford.
That single campaign in west London, 2018–2019, changed the trajectory of his career. His composure on the ball, recovery pace and reading of danger made him a standout in the Championship. Aston Villa moved decisively in 2019, taking him into the Premier League, where he never really looked back.
At Villa, consistency became his calling card. Week after week, season after season, Konsa delivered. His versatility — equally comfortable at centre-back and right-back — gave successive managers tactical freedom and helped cement his status as one of the division’s leading defenders.
That reliability eventually translated to the international stage. Konsa represented England at Under-20 and Under-21 level before finally stepping into the senior setup in 2023. Since that debut, he has been a regular part of the Three Lions squad, featuring at Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup, experience that now comes with him to the Emirates.
Statement from Arsenal Sporting Director
Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta made no attempt to play down the scale of the signing.
“We are delighted to complete the signing of Ezri Konsa,” he said. “He is a defender of high quality, and his physical attributes, composure and tactical intelligence have made him one of the most consistent players at this level in the Premier League. Thanks to his ability to play at centre-back and right-back, Ezri will give our team important flexibility, while maintaining the high defensive standards that are a key element in our pursuit of major honours.”
Berta underlined that this is not just about filling a squad slot, but about adding personality and presence to the dressing room.
“We are welcoming a player with proven experience in the Premier League and at international level, along with strong leadership qualities, and he will be able to adapt smoothly to our style of play. Just as importantly, we are welcoming a player who possesses the character and mentality needed to make an immediate impact within our club.”
Konsa will wear the number 15 shirt and links up with his new team-mates in London immediately, stepping into a defence expected to carry Arsenal through another tilt at major honours.
