Arsenal Signs Gibraltar Winger Samuel Scanlon from Manchester United
Arsenal are set to prise highly rated teenager Samuel Scanlon away from Manchester United as their aggressive rebuild at Under-21 level gathers pace.
The 19-year-old winger, on United’s books since 2021, is expected to join the Gunners on a free transfer. Standard Sport understands the deal includes a hefty 40 per cent sell-on clause for United, underlining how highly they still rate his potential.
Scanlon has already completed his medical and the two clubs are working to finalise the move within the next 48 hours.
No loan, no easing in: Arsenal want him close
Arsenal have no immediate plans to send Scanlon out on loan. He will start with the club’s Under-21s, but the message around the move is clear: this is a pathway signing, not a parking one.
The teenager is joining with the express aim of forcing his way into Mikel Arteta’s first-team thinking as quickly as he can. Arsenal’s staff see the Under-21 side as a launchpad, not a holding pen, and Scanlon’s profile fits that shift.
Full international at 19, interest across Europe
Scanlon is no unknown project. He has already been capped 24 times at senior level by Gibraltar, a remarkable tally for a player still in his teens. That international exposure has pushed his name across scouting departments in Europe, with clubs in Spain particularly attentive.
Sevilla tried to land him permanently in January, sensing an opportunity. United blocked that move and instead sent him to Swindon Town on loan for the second half of last season. Arsenal have now moved in before the Spanish side or others could revive their interest.
Familiar faces and strong references
Inside Arsenal’s academy setup, Scanlon has influential admirers. New Under-21 head coach David Horseman worked with him briefly during his time at United and strongly recommended the winger to the club’s hierarchy.
The reports did not stop there. Chris Perkins, now at Arsenal and formerly head of academy recruitment at Derby County, also fed in positive assessments. Perkins tracked Scanlon during his rise through Derby’s youth ranks before the youngster left for Old Trafford, and his endorsement added weight to the move.
United to Arsenal pipeline opens up
Scanlon is the second Manchester United youngster to head to north London this summer. He will follow defender Habeeb Ogunneye in swapping Old Trafford for Arsenal, with Ogunneye also arriving on a free transfer that includes a significant sell-on clause.
The pattern is hard to ignore. Arsenal are leaning into opportunities at rival academies, using smart, low-cost deals with upside baked in for the selling club.
Under-21s become a priority battleground
Inside the club, there has been a clear reset. Arsenal want a stronger, more competitive Under-21 group, one capable of both feeding Arteta’s squad and holding its own in elite youth competition.
That strategy has already brought movement. On Tuesday, 18-year-old striker Igor Tyjon confirmed he would be leaving Blackburn Rovers after Arsenal finally secured his signature.
