Arsenal Targets Brighton's Jack Hinshelwood for £51m
Arsenal have moved to the front of the queue for Brighton talent Jack Hinshelwood, with the Premier League champions ready to test the Seagulls’ resolve over a deal that could climb to around £51m.
Fresh from ending a 22-year wait for the title, Mikel Arteta is refusing to stand still. Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis, Piero Hincapie and Illan Meslier are already through the door, but the recruitment drive is nowhere near finished. Arsenal want a centre-back. They want another wide option. They may yet move for a striker.
And now, they want Hinshelwood.
Arsenal push ahead of Manchester rivals
According to a report in The Sun, Arsenal have marked the 21-year-old as a “top priority” signing and are currently leading Manchester United and Manchester City in the chase. Arteta is said to view the Brighton academy graduate as the “perfect addition” to his evolving midfield.
Hinshelwood is nominally a defensive midfielder, but Brighton have used him higher up the pitch as well. He responded with four goals and four assists in the Premier League last season, a return that has alerted the division’s elite to his versatility and composure in possession.
Brighton, as ever, hold strong cards. Hinshelwood has three years left on his contract, and the club would prefer to keep him. The report suggests, though, that an offer in the region of £43m to £51m could force a serious conversation on the south coast. The player is also steeped in Brighton history: he is the son of former Seagulls defender Adam Hinshelwood, another reminder of just how deep the club’s academy roots now run.
For Arsenal, he would represent both a present option and a long-term piece. For Brighton, he is the latest test of their model: develop, showcase, then sell at a premium.
Centre-back hunt stalls on two fronts
While the Hinshelwood pursuit gathers pace, Arsenal’s search for a new centre-back has hit familiar resistance.
Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa has been widely described as the main target, and one report on Friday even claimed the deal was “99% done”. That, though, has been sharply cooled.
Transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel on Saturday morning, stressed that Konsa is still only on Arsenal’s shortlist, albeit as a player who is “very appreciated”. No agreement, no done deal – not yet.
Arsenal have explored alternatives, but doors are closing there as well. Romano has ruled out moves for Atletico Madrid’s Marc Pubill and Bayer Leverkusen’s Jarell Quansah after both clubs pushed back.
On Pubill, Romano was clear: “The player is not for sale. Atletico Madrid have no intention to sell.”
Leverkusen’s stance on Quansah was just as firm. “Arsenal made official contact with Bayer Leverkusen… The answer from Leverkusen is that they don’t want to sell the player. So they rejected the approach,” Romano explained.
So Arsenal press on. A title to defend, a squad to refine, and a market that refuses to make life easy. If Hinshelwood does become the next big-money arrival in north London, he may well be walking into a dressing room still waiting for its new defensive lynchpin.
