Aston Villa Secure Ibrahim Mbaye from PSG for €55m

Aston Villa have stolen a march on Liverpool and the rest of the Premier League, striking an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain to sign highly rated winger Ibrahim Mbaye.

The 18-year-old, long linked with a move to England, is finally on his way to the Premier League – just not to Merseyside. Liverpool had explored a deal as they mapped out life after Mohamed Salah, but walked away when they saw the numbers.

PSG shifted Mbaye’s price tag throughout the summer depending on who was at the table. Liverpool were quoted around €70 million. There was some belief that figure could be negotiated down, but the club chose not to get dragged into a prolonged haggle and instead threw their weight behind a move for top target Bradley Barcola.

That decision opened the door. Villa stepped through it.

Villa pounce as PSG soften stance

Unai Emery’s side have tracked Mbaye for some time. Villa were already keen in January, only to be rebuffed when PSG refused to sell. Mbaye stayed, but his season never quite caught fire again.

He had broken into the PSG first team early, racking up 42 senior appearances by 18 and earning a place with Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations in the winter and at the World Cup this summer. The exposure was elite. The minutes were not.

After returning from AFCON, Mbaye struggled for game time in the second half of the campaign. For a teenager already used to the big stage, the bench quickly lost its appeal. A move became a necessity rather than a luxury.

This time, PSG yielded.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Villa have agreed a €55 million fee with the French champions, helped by the strong relationship between PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris. Negotiations, once opened, moved quickly.

The transfer is now being finalised, with Mbaye expected to sign a long-term contract at Villa Park. The report stresses that the Senegal international has been a long-standing target for the Birmingham club, not a panic buy or a reaction to any single failed pursuit.

Emery gets his winger

Emery wanted another wide forward. Mbaye is set to be central to that plan rather than a squad option.

At 18, he arrives with far more top-level experience than most players his age. Those 42 games for PSG, plus tournament football with Senegal at AFCON and the World Cup, give him a profile that fits Villa’s growing ambition: young, high ceiling, already hardened by pressure.

Villa had also been in talks with AC Milan forward Rafael Leao in recent days, pushing hard to add another marquee attacking name. But the indications are that Leao has opted for Galatasaray instead, unconvinced by Villa’s contract proposal.

That could have left a hole in Villa’s summer. Instead, the Mbaye agreement drops at exactly the right moment, handing Emery the explosive winger he wanted and giving Villa one of Europe’s most coveted teenagers.

Liverpool looked, hesitated and turned away. Villa didn’t.
