Aston Villa's Transfer Needs: Leão, Raskin, and Defensive Reinforcements
Aston Villa’s bruising opening day in the Premier League has left the club with no illusions: this squad needs help, and quickly. Unai Emery wants quality, not just bodies, and the radar has swung back towards Serie A.
Rafael Leão, long linked with a move to England, is again being whispered in Villa circles. The Milan winger has the blend of pace, flair and directness that Emery’s attack so obviously lacked in that heavy defeat to Brighton. If the solution is not called Nicolas Jackson or Jean-Philippe Mateta, Villa may yet test Milan’s resolve over the Portuguese forward.
Emery’s rebuild is not limited to the front line. The midfield that was overrun at the weekend is under review, and Rangers’ Nicolas Raskin has emerged as a possible fix. The Belgian offers energy and bite in the middle of the pitch, something Villa were short of when Brighton cut through them. Behind him, defensive reinforcement also looks imminent: Club Brugge centre-back Joel Ordóñez is expected to come in after Southampton pushed back on a move for Taylor Harwood-Bellis.
City circle Enzo as Chelsea juggle options
At Chelsea, Xabi Alonso continues to keep the door ajar on Enzo Fernández’s future. The head coach has repeatedly refused to shut down talk of an exit, and Manchester City have taken note. City, who have tracked the World Cup winner before, are again weighing up a move for the Argentinian midfielder.
Chelsea, aware of that possibility, have been working on contingencies. Alex Scott remains a leading candidate to replace Enzo if he goes, but the clock is ticking. Bournemouth have already turned down three bids from Stamford Bridge this summer for the 20-year-old, and there is no sign yet that they will soften their stance. Should that stalemate continue, Chelsea could pivot towards Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga, another name admired in west London.
City’s recruitment department is busy elsewhere too. They have joined Tottenham in monitoring Cody Gakpo, who has impressed at Liverpool with his versatility across the front line. The pursuit looks complicated. With no new forwards through the door at Anfield, Liverpool are in no position to let the Dutchman leave, and any serious offer would have to be eye-watering to even start a conversation.
Liverpool themselves are stuck in their own market maze. A move for Bradley Barcola has stalled, progress on that deal proving difficult. As they look for ways to refresh Andoni Iraola’s midfield, Monaco’s Lamine Camara has been linked as a potential solution, a player who could fill a glaring gap in the centre of the pitch.
Wilder eyes steel, Wrexham keep spending
Drop down to the Championship and the problems are different but just as clear. Sheffield United have opened their campaign with back-to-back 0-0 draws, and Chris Wilder has drawn the obvious conclusion: the Blades need more authority at the back.
Adam Webster, now a free agent after leaving Brighton, has been identified as a target. His Premier League experience and aerial strength appeal to Wilder as he looks to tighten a defence that has been solid so far but lacks depth across a long season.
Further down the pyramid, Wrexham’s ambition shows no sign of slowing. The Welsh club are targeting Pavel Sulc, valued at around £10m by Lyon, a figure that underlines just how far Wrexham’s recruitment strategy has evolved. They have also set their sights on Angers left-back Jacques Ekomié, though that chase is complicated by interest from West Ham.
The Hammers, for their part, are bracing for movement of their own. With Brentford circling El Hadji Malick Diouf, West Ham are preparing for the possibility of being forced into the market again.
