Aston Villa Break Transfer Record with Nicolas Jackson and Ibrahim Mbaye Deals
Aston Villa have ripped up their transfer ceiling for the second time this summer, sealing a club-record move for Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson and striking a verbal agreement to sign Paris Saint-Germain winger Ibrahim Mbaye.
Jackson joins in a deal worth a guaranteed £47.5m, with add-ons pushing the total package towards £65m. That figure eclipses the £59.5m spent on Johan Manzambi earlier in the window, underlining the scale of Villa’s rebuild under Unai Emery.
Jackson in, Watkins out
Jackson arrives not as competition for Ollie Watkins, but as his replacement.
Watkins is closing in on a £50m switch to Al Hilal, with the England international currently undergoing a medical ahead of his move to Saudi Arabia. He was left out of the squad for the game against Brighton as the transfer edges towards completion.
Villa have moved decisively. With Watkins on his way and Emery demanding a side that can keep pace with the Premier League’s elite, Jackson becomes the focal point of a new-look attack, the latest headline signing in a summer that has reshaped the dressing room.
Villa push through Mbaye agreement
The overhaul does not stop there.
Villa have also reached a verbal agreement with PSG to sign Ibrahim Mbaye, with a fee in the region of £47m understood to be in place between the clubs.
The move comes after Villa missed out on AC Milan forward Rafa Leao, who is heading to Galatasaray. Rather than dwell on that setback, Villa turned quickly to Mbaye, a player they had tracked for months.
Sky Sports News first reported in March that Villa were among the Premier League clubs weighing up a move for the winger. Liverpool also explored a potential deal earlier this summer, before switching their attention to Mbaye’s team-mate Bradley Barcola.
Mbaye operates primarily from the right flank and made 24 Ligue 1 appearances for PSG last season, scoring three times and providing two assists. At 21, he fits the profile Emery keeps referencing: high ceiling, big stage experience, room to grow.
Emery’s squad ripped up and rebuilt
The pace of change at Villa Park has been relentless.
Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa and Lucas Digne have already departed. Watkins is set to follow, and even World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is facing an uncertain future as interest builds.
In their place, Villa have recruited aggressively. Alejandro Garnacho, Johan Manzambi, Leon Goretzka, Joao Gomes, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Matteo Ruggeri and now Jackson have all come through the door. Mbaye is expected to join them once the verbal agreement is turned into a signed contract.
It is a squad being stripped back and rebuilt in real time, with Emery at the centre of every decision.
Emery: ‘We don’t want to be a club to sell players’
Speaking ahead of Villa’s clash with Arsenal on Monday Night Football, Emery was clear about the logic behind the upheaval as Deadline Day on September 1 looms.
“We took some decisions because it's good for the club. We tried to compete as good as possible, but some situations are clear,” he said.
“It's the right way and decision. We don't want to be a club to sell players, but our responsibility is there. For the club it's a good deal.
“It's not changing our priorities to be competitive. We must be the same. Strong development with the players.
“I am confident and positive. The players we are signing are good players. We need to get balance with experience and players with huge potential.
“Of course, I want to keep some players, the ones who help us to be successful. But I accept it because I have experience before in the same situation.
“I expect to continue to do special and different ways. The objective is to get progressively in the same way. We will need time.”
Time is the one thing the Premier League rarely offers. Villa, though, have made their choice: cash in on key assets, reinvest heavily, and trust Emery to weld this expensive, ambitious group into a side that can live with the very best.
