Atlético Madrid spent the day joking on social media. Nobody at the Metropolitano is laughing.

A string of ironic posts on the club’s official X account – mocking up imaginary transfer offers for Lamine Yamal, Pedri and Raphinha – looked, at first glance, like classic online banter. A bit of needle, a bit of theatre, the usual noise between two giants who rarely miss a chance to wind each other up.

Underneath the memes, though, sits a very real anger directed at FC Barcelona and the way the Catalan club have circled around Julián Álvarez.

From memes to mutiny

The trigger is clear. Reports have multiplied in recent days linking Barça with a move for Álvarez and suggesting that an offer has already landed on Atlético’s desk. Inside the club, they flatly deny receiving anything. Not a call. Not a document. Nothing.

So the social media department loaded up the sarcasm. Those mock bids for Barça’s brightest talents were not just jokes; they were a message.

“It might seem like a joke or a bit of humour, but this is very serious. We’ve been very angry with FC Barcelona for some time now. It was done ironically, to hold a mirror up to the Catalan club, to show them what they’re doing,” club sources told Mundo Deportivo.

The tone online was playful. The mood behind the scenes is anything but.

“A coordinated campaign”

Within the Metropolitano offices, Atlético are convinced they are dealing with more than just transfer gossip. They see a pattern, a deliberate build-up around Álvarez’s future designed to turn up the heat.

Club figures point to specific flashpoints: the constant messaging from Fabrizio Romano, the way sections of the press that follow Barça handle the story, and the scenes when Atlético president Enrique Cerezo sets foot in Barcelona.

When Cerezo goes for a meal in the city, he is swamped with questions about whether he will sit down with Joan Laporta to discuss Álvarez. In the mixed zone, Atlético players face repeated probing on the same topic. For the club, it all feels orchestrated.

The frustration runs deeper. “They organize a dinner in Barcelona and alert El Chiringuito so they can film it, so Juanma López (a player agent and supposed mediator in this matter) is seen leaving the restaurant,” the same sources complain.

Then comes the leak. An offer is said to have been sent to Atlético. Inside the club, they insist nothing has arrived. No official proposal. No formal approach.

For months, Atlético believe Barcelona have been “destabilising things” around Álvarez. The social media blast was, in their words, the point at which they decided enough was enough. “It’s over. We’re very angry and this was our way of showing it,” the source added.

Atlético play their trump card

If there is fury, there is also a sense of security. Atlético know exactly where they stand with Álvarez.

The Argentine is under contract until 2030. His release clause sits at €500 million. In a market where numbers are often floated for effect, this one is designed to close the conversation before it starts.

“What is clear is that Atlético holds all the cards. The player is protected (€500 million release clause) and has a long-term contract (until 2030),” the club source underlined.

Internally, the message never changes. Outwardly, it is the same line on repeat: Atlético are delighted with Álvarez, they see him as central to their project, and they are counting on him for next season.

Talk of a potential deal at around €150 million, which surfaced in earlier reports, now draws nothing but rejection from the Metropolitano. There is no negotiation, no middle ground, no creative structure.

“Julián can’t be signed with a fixed fee, paid in installments over several seasons with some variables. It’s a €500 million cash payment that needs to be deposited at La Liga headquarters,” they stress.

In other words: if you want him, you pay the clause in full, in one go, or you move on.

Agent caught in the crossfire

The storm has also dragged Álvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, into the debate. His role has come under scrutiny amid the noise around supposed talks and intermediaries.

Atlético close ranks around him. From their perspective, if Barcelona had followed the usual protocol and gone directly and properly through the club, the agent would never have been thrust into the spotlight in this way.

“If Barcelona had done things properly, the agent wouldn’t be involved. But if you’re bypassing the club, then you’re not doing things the right way,” is the line from inside the Metropolitano.

So the memes stay online, the sarcasm continues to circulate, and the likes and retweets keep rolling in. Behind that digital smirk, though, Atlético have drawn a hard line: Álvarez is not for sale, the relationship with Barcelona is strained, and the next move, if there is one, will not be played out on social media.
