The clock is ticking on one of the window’s most tangled stories – and Atlético Madrid have had enough.

Julián Álvarez’s future must be resolved by Friday. That is the deadline Atlético have set as the Argentine forward pushes for clarity and Europe’s elite circle.
Barcelona want him. Arsenal want him even more. Atlético’s hierarchy, though, have drawn a very public red line.
Chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has already declared that Álvarez will “never, ever” be sold to Barcelona, a stance reinforced by a strongly worded club statement. The board backed the decision unanimously, accusing Barça of failing to act in a “professional, ethical and respectful manner” and insisting there will be “zero consideration” of any deal with the Catalan club.
The message is blunt: they will do business, but not with Barcelona.
That leaves the door ajar for Arsenal. The 26-year-old is the Gunners’ top attacking target and the club are closely monitoring the situation, ready to pounce if an opening appears before the deadline. They know the clock favours them. Atlético’s self-imposed cut-off is designed to leave enough time to find a replacement.
Tension around the player is growing. Álvarez has missed training for two days, was told there is a “zero per cent chance” of a move to Barcelona, and was booed during a substitute appearance in the draw with Villarreal on Sunday. He then sat out a midweek fixture through what the club described as “illness”.
If Arsenal move, they will be stepping into a volatile situation – but also into a rare chance to prise away a prime forward from one of Europe’s hardest negotiators.
Liverpool go big for Barcola and push on Sarr
While Atlético dig in, Liverpool are spending.
The club have agreed a £100m fee with Paris Saint-Germain for Bradley Barcola, with a further £20m in potential add-ons after PSG softened their initial demands. The 23-year-old France winger is central to Andoni Iraola’s late-window rebuild, with Liverpool targeting three more signings, including two wide forwards.
One of those other wide options remains Ismaila Sarr. An opening offer of around £50m has been rejected by Crystal Palace, but Liverpool have not walked away. They have already moved on from Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh after resistance from the south-coast club; Sarr, though, is still very much alive as a target.
All of which throws Cody Gakpo’s future into doubt.
Tottenham are keen, and Manchester City have also registered interest. Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi is understood to be pushing hard for the Dutchman despite a summer spend already exceeding £300m. Asked about Gakpo’s situation, Iraola refused to offer assurances, admitting that “when the market is open, you cannot guarantee anything with anyone”.
Liverpool’s attacking line could look radically different by the time the window shuts – and Gakpo may yet be one of the high-profile casualties.
Rashford’s crossroads at Manchester United
Across the city, another forward faces an uncertain future.
Marcus Rashford appears to be on the road back at Manchester United after last season’s loan at Barcelona. He came off the bench in the 2-0 defeat to Hull last weekend and has the public backing of manager Michael Carrick.
But the window is still open. So is the door.
Turkish side Fenerbahce are pushing to test United’s resolve as they prepare for a Champions League campaign. A Spor report that club president Cihan Kamer wants talks over a deal for Rashford, sensing an opportunity while his status at Old Trafford remains fragile.
Reintegration or reinvention abroad? The next few days will tell.
Zirkzee set for Fiorentina switch
One United forward already edging towards the exit is Joshua Zirkzee.
Down the pecking order under Carrick and facing limited game time this season, the striker is close to a loan move to Fiorentina. Gazzetta report that the Italian club are in negotiations over a £4.2m loan with an option to buy next summer.
For Zirkzee, it is a chance to reset his career in Serie A. For United, it is another piece moved in a reshaping forward department.
Nelson’s long Arsenal chapter closes

Reiss Nelson has left the club after his contract was terminated by mutual agreement, allowing the 26-year-old to become a free agent. Arsenal confirmed the decision with a statement that underlined the depth of his connection to the club.
Nelson spent 18 years at Arsenal, rising through the academy to make 90 first-team appearances, scoring eight goals and providing nine assists. He lifted the FA Cup in 2020 and contributed to Community Shield wins in 2017 and 2020.
His development included four loan spells: Hoffenheim in 2018/19, Feyenoord in 2021/22, Fulham in 2024/25 and Brentford last season. After 68 youth-team appearances and a first professional deal in December 2016, his Arsenal journey has finally run its course.
He leaves with the club’s public thanks and best wishes – and a free run at the next chapter of his career.
Brighton content, but watching the market
Further down the south coast, Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler is keeping a calmer stance.
“I’m really happy with the squad so far,” he said, while acknowledging “a few issues” with injuries. His focus, he stressed, is on finding solutions rather than complaining.
On depth, Hürzeler said he is “quite happy overall”, but left the door open to late business. Anything new, he insisted, must fit the club’s demands on personality, character and style of play.
