Atlético Madrid Pursue Racing Santander Defender Jorge Salinas

Atlético Madrid are moving aggressively to land Racing Santander defender Jorge Salinas, stepping up their bid to beat Manchester United to the highly rated left-back.

United’s interest in the 19-year-old first surfaced in July, when he was flagged as a player firmly on their radar. Scouts from Old Trafford tracked him closely throughout last season as he helped Racing win promotion to LaLiga, and the monitoring only intensified over the summer.

Salinas spent three weeks with Spain at the European Under-19 Championship in Wales, a tournament United watched at close quarters. The teenager delivered. He played a central role in Spain’s run and eventual triumph, performances that only strengthened the positive reports already stacked on United’s recruitment desk.

Now comes the decision point. United are weighing up whether to move from admiration to action and trigger his €16million (£13.7m / $18.6m) release clause.

That buyout figure only recently jumped, rising significantly after Racing’s promotion. Barcelona had previously considered Salinas as a long-term project signing, but backed away once the clause doubled, cooling their interest.

Atlético change the tone of the chase

Atlético see something different. Not a slow-burn project. A first-team option.

The Madrid club want Salinas to join Diego Simeone’s senior squad straight away and, after sanctioning Matteo Ruggeri’s move to Aston Villa, they have accelerated talks over the past month. The left side of their defence needs reinforcing; they believe Salinas can step straight into that battle.

Sources indicate Atlético know United have already spoken to both Racing and the player’s camp. That awareness has set off alarm bells at the Metropolitano. The concern is clear: if United decide to formalise their interest, the Premier League pull and the simplicity of a release clause could swing the race.

So Atlético are pushing harder, trying to get ahead of any late surge from Manchester.

United weigh up their left-back puzzle

For United, Salinas is part of a broader left-back reshuffle rather than the sole focus.

Lewis Hall of Newcastle remains their preferred target. United are actively working on that deal, but Newcastle are standing firm and do not want to sell, a stance that has complicated negotiations and forced United to widen their search.

That’s where Salinas has grown in appeal. Young, already tested in senior football, and available at a fixed price, he has moved up their list as a serious alternative.

He is not alone on that shortlist. RB Leipzig’s David Raum is also under consideration, while Club Brugge’s Joaquin Seys has been scouted and assessed. Belgian sources, though, are adamant Seys will not be leaving this summer, closing off that avenue.

So the market narrows, and the race sharpens.

Salinas now sits at the centre of a fast-developing tug-of-war: Atlético trying to move first and fold him into their immediate plans, United deliberating over whether to pull the trigger on a €16million clause that could shape their left flank for years.

Who blinks first may decide where one of Spain’s most intriguing young defenders lines up when the new season kicks into full gear.
