Atlético Madrid Rejects Barcelona and Real Madrid's Attempts for Julián Álvarez

Atlético Madrid have drawn a thick red line through Julian Álvarez’s name on the summer transfer market – and they’re making sure Europe hears it.

Barcelona have identified the former Man City forward as the No. 9 to spearhead Hansi Flick’s new era, and were preparing a package worth over €135 million to try to prise him away from the Metropolitano. Instead, they’ve run straight into a brick wall built by Atlético’s board and reinforced in public by club president Enrique Cerezo.

“Julián is an Atlético Madrid player,” Cerezo said, speaking to El Desmarque as speculation raged in Spain. He didn’t bother dressing it up. “Whoever wants him can come and look at the contract (the release clause), and if they’re interested, they’ll sign him; if not, they won’t. It seems like this is the story of the summer; you all know exactly how things stand. Julián is an Atlético Madrid player, and I believe he will remain an Atlético Madrid player.”

One sentence mattered more than the rest: “look at the contract.”

That contract contains a €500 million release clause. By pointing everyone straight at it, Cerezo has effectively shut the door on negotiation. No discounts. No clever payment structures. No drawn‑out talks over add‑ons. Pay the clause or don’t bother calling.

Barcelona had hoped that a guaranteed €135m plus bonuses would at least start a conversation. Instead, Atlético are refusing even to sit at the table for anything below the full, legally binding figure. For a club already under intense economic scrutiny, Barça now find themselves staring at a financial mountain that looks close to unscalable.

And the stand-off is getting nasty.

The rivalry between the clubs has spilled from the boardroom onto social media. Atlético recently chose mockery as their weapon of choice, posting parody “signings” of Barcelona stars such as Lamine Yamal and Pedri. It wasn’t just a joke; it came wrapped in a pointed statement accusing the Catalan side of operating a “propaganda machine” to unsettle Álvarez ahead of the window.

Inside the Metropolitano, the feeling is clear: they believe Barcelona are waging a campaign of “calculated leaks” to chip away at Álvarez’s value and test the player’s resolve. The club’s official communication to supporters was laced with irritation, urging fans not to “believe everything you see, especially if it’s related to Barça.”

This is not the language of two clubs quietly working towards a compromise. It’s open hostility. If talks ever did begin, they would do so in a climate already poisoned by accusation and ridicule.

As if that weren’t enough, there is a third giant in the room.

Real Madrid have also moved for Álvarez – and failed. In a striking twist, Atlético recently turned down a huge €150m proposal from the Bernabéu. Florentino Pérez, fresh from re-election and having promised a new Galáctico, had set his sights on the 26‑year‑old as a marquee arrival. Even a bid that would have rewritten Madrid’s own transfer records wasn’t enough to shift Atlético’s stance.

That rejection sends a brutal message across Spain and beyond. If €150m from Real Madrid doesn’t even crack the door open, then the price is not just high, it’s immovable. Atlético are not bluffing. Not this summer, not for this player.

For Barcelona, the implications are stark. Flick’s primary target is locked behind a €500m clause, with the selling club publicly daring suitors to meet it and privately furious at how the chase has been conducted. Walking away means ripping up Plan A for the striker position. Pushing on means trying to engineer one of the most expensive deals in football history under the watchful eye of La Liga’s financial controls.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, have already tested the limits and been rebuffed. Pérez has promised a star. Atlético have just told him – and Barcelona – that if that star is named Julian Álvarez, they’ll have to pay a galaxy’s price.
