Ayyoub Bouaddi: Manchester City's Promising Young Midfielder

Ayyoub Bouaddi has barely turned 18, yet he already carries the kind of expectations usually reserved for established stars. That’s the scale of the bet Manchester City have made.

The young midfielder arrives in England with more than 100 senior competitive appearances behind him, a remarkable haul for someone still in his teens. His rise began at Lille, where he forced his way into the first-team picture early and stayed there long enough to catch the eye of just about every major recruiter in Europe.

France saw his potential before anyone else at international level. Bouaddi moved through every youth age group from U16 to U21 in blue, a steady climb that normally ends in a senior cap. Instead, he chose a different flag. Morocco won his allegiance, and by the time the 2026 World Cup came around, The Atlas Lions had another highly rated talent in their ranks.

By then, his future felt inevitable. A big move was coming. The only question left was the destination.

Europe’s elite circled. City won.

The Premier League champions secured one of the most coveted young midfielders in the game, a player widely viewed as a long-term cornerstone rather than a short-term project. Enzo Maresca has opted to introduce him carefully, limiting him to two substitute appearances so far, but inside the club there is little doubt about where this is heading: Bouaddi is expected to become one of the first names on the teamsheet.

The teenager himself sounds convinced he has landed in the right place. Speaking to City’s official channels after completing his transfer, he did not hide his admiration.

“Manchester City are, for me, the best club in the world. It’s a dream to be here and be able to call myself a City player. I have spent most of my life working hard to become the best player I can be and reach the top of the game,” he said.

He has studied them from afar for years. Now he is in the middle of it.

“I’ve watched City for many years, and I love their style of play. City always try and play quality football. And they have shown they are winners – this club feels like it’s built to win. The squad is world-class and Enzo is a top manager. And I’m really looking forward to playing at the Etihad Stadium, in front of all the fans.”

There is no false modesty in his ambition, only a clear awareness of the work still ahead.

“I have plenty of improving to do. I am only 18. I am happy with the progress I have made so far, but I also know I can improve so much. This is undoubtedly the best place for me to do that. This club demands trophies and I will give everything to make sure we are challenging for every title.”

Inside City, the belief in him runs just as strong.

The club’s director of football, Hugo Viana, did not shy away from the scale of their expectations when he outlined why they pushed so hard to sign him.

“Ayyoub’s potential is extremely high - a player equipped with everything a top midfielder needs. At just 18, he already has outstanding football intelligence and that will only improve under the guidance of Enzo,” Viana said.

“We have watched him very, very closely and throughout that process we have become increasingly convinced he is a huge talent who will thrive at City. We are really happy he has joined us and our job now is to ensure we provide him with everything he needs to fulfil his potential.”

For now, Bouaddi waits his turn, coming off the bench and learning the demands of a team built to win every competition it enters. The billing is huge. The platform is bigger. How quickly he turns promise into dominance will say plenty about City’s next era in midfield.
