Balogun Transfer Race: Villa and Barcelona Join Spurs for €60m Deal
Folarin Balogun has gone from rising prospect to one of the hottest names of the window, and the queue for his signature is growing fast.
After a standout season with Monaco, the 25-year-old is now firmly on the radar of Aston Villa and Barcelona, who, according to French outlet L'Equipe, have registered concrete interest in the forward. Tottenham Hotspur were the first to move, opening formal talks over a €60 million deal, but they no longer have a clear run at him.
Balogun’s numbers explain why. Nineteen goals in 43 games across all competitions for Monaco last season, plus a string of impressive displays for the United States at the recent World Cup, have pushed him into the top bracket of attacking targets as the market ticks towards its September 1 deadline.
Villa’s contingency plan, Barça’s rebuild
Villa’s interest is tied directly to uncertainty over Ollie Watkins. With Al-Hilal circling, the Premier League club are keeping Balogun in their sights as a ready-made replacement should their No 9 be tempted to Saudi Arabia. It is not a move they want to make out of panic; it is one they are preparing in case the dominoes start to fall.
Barcelona’s need is more immediate. Having parted ways with both Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, the Spanish giants are stripped of proven firepower and urgently searching for a new focal point in attack. Balogun fits the profile: mobile, direct, and already tested at the highest level.
Their recruitment focus has swung towards the Monaco striker as they look to rebuild a frontline that has been ripped apart in a single summer. The question is whether they can move quickly enough, and decisively enough, in a crowded field.
Monaco’s stance and the Spurs angle
Monaco, for their part, are not blind to the market. The club are understood to be open to cashing in on Balogun at the right price, using a sale to fuel further reinforcements. It would follow a similar pattern to the departure of Maghnes Akliouche to Paris Saint-Germain: sell a key asset, recycle the funds, and reshape the squad.
Tottenham, who initiated talks over a €60m transfer, still have Balogun high on their list even as they scan alternatives. Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush is among those being considered, but the Monaco forward remains a priority target as Spurs look to sharpen their attacking options before the window shuts.
Amid all this, Monaco head coach Filipe Luis is clinging to hope that his main striker stays put. Speaking recently about the situation, he did not hide either his admiration or his realism.
“He is one of our players. I know he’s going to receive a lot of offers given his last season and his World Cup performance,” Luis said. “He’s a special player. You don’t find many players on the market with his attributes. If he stays, I’ll be really, really happy to have him with us.”
Clock ticking towards September 1
The tension around Balogun’s future is already spilling onto the pitch. He sat out Monaco’s 3-2 Europa Conference League playoff win over Gornik Zabrze in Poland, even though he has been registered on the UEFA squad list. It was a notable absence, and it only fuels the sense that a major decision is close.
Tottenham, Villa, and Barcelona all know the terms: meet the €60m asking price, and do it quickly. With the window closing on September 1, hesitation could be fatal.
Balogun is expected back in full training shortly, and Monaco will soon have to decide whether to throw him into their Ligue 1 clash with Le Havre on Sunday. By then, the picture might be clearer. Or the saga might be about to explode into its decisive final act.
