Balraj Landa Embraces New Challenge in Hong Kong Premier League
Balraj Landa has traded the fringes of the English Premier League for a leap into the unknown in Hong Kong – and he sounds ready to embrace every uncomfortable moment of it.
The 21-year-old attacking midfielder, released by AFC Bournemouth in February, has signed for Southern ahead of the new Hong Kong Premier League season, completing a sharp change of direction that has taken him from academy football to non-league, and now to Asia.
The move did not come out of nowhere. Zesh Rehman – the former Fulham defender and ex player-manager at Southern – opened the door, and once the offer landed, Landa barely paused.
“The decision to come was a no-brainer,” he said. His reaction was instant. “My first thought was, ‘What an opportunity to get’.”
For Landa, this is more than just a fresh club. It is a reset.
“It ticks all the boxes for me: it’s a good platform to show myself in Asia, and to really get my name out there,” he explained. Then he went beyond the usual footballer’s script. “On the non-football side, it’s a chance to live on the other side of the world, to adapt and to survive by myself.”
That word – survive – tells its own story. No comfort zone, no short drive from home, no familiar dressing rooms. Just a new league, new culture, new expectations.
Landa arrives as a two-footed, “very technical and creative” attacking midfielder, the kind of player who wants the ball when the game tightens. He has carried that profile since childhood. Local giants Southampton picked him up at just eight years old, setting him on the long, unforgiving road of English academy football.
From there, the path has already twisted. After Bournemouth let him go, he dropped into the non-league grind with Salisbury City and Dorchester Town, fighting for minutes and momentum far from the glamour of the top flight.
Now comes another turn: Southern, and a Hong Kong campaign that will test both his talent and his resolve.
He wanted a platform. He has one, on the other side of the world.
