Barcelona Reach Agreement for Rodri Transfer Worth €76.5 Million
Barcelona have an agreement in principle to bring Manchester City midfielder Rodri to Camp Nou in a deal worth around €76.5 million, a transfer that sends a jolt through both La Liga and the Premier League.
The two clubs are now exchanging paperwork to close the move, with only the final formalities standing between Rodri and a return to Spanish football. The 30-year-old is expected in Barcelona in the coming days and could be unveiled before Wednesday’s Joan Gamper Trophy clash against Al Ahly at Spotify Camp Nou.
City rejected two earlier Barcelona bids before the Catalan club came back over the weekend with a third offer that finally hit the mark. Rodri had just one year left on his deal at the Etihad Stadium, and City were understood to be open to a sale at the right price.
Real Madrid also pushed for the Spain captain, but once negotiations accelerated, sources indicate Rodri’s preference was clear: Barcelona or nothing.
A pivotal piece in a frantic rebuild
This is not a quiet summer at Camp Nou; it is a teardown and rebuild on the fly.
Rodri arrives as part of a sweeping overhaul under Hansi Flick. Fullback Joao Cancelo is poised to rejoin as a free agent, while the pair will slot in as Barcelona’s fourth and fifth signings of the window after the arrivals of Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi and Jesse Bisiwu.
The plan in midfield changed abruptly. A long-term injury to Frenkie de Jong forced the club to scan the market for a high-end replacement. Rodri was not at the top of the list at the start of the summer, but his situation shifted once he capped a stunning international run by winning the World Cup with Spain.
Barcelona’s work is far from done. The club are still hunting a centre-forward, with Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez the leading target following the exits of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, the latter having agreed a move to Paris Saint-Germain.
As the pieces fall into place, betting markets have already reacted, with Barcelona being priced among the favourites to retain their La Liga crown under Flick. Rodri is not just another signing in that picture; he is the anchor around which the entire structure can turn.
From Villarreal prospect to Ballon d’Or winner
Rodri’s journey to this point has been relentless.
He emerged from Villarreal’s academy, earned his reputation at Atletico Madrid, then became City’s record signing in 2019 when the English champions triggered his €70 million release clause. From there, he grew into the heartbeat of Pep Guardiola’s side.
The honours followed. Four Premier League titles. A Champions League. The FA Cup. The EFL Cup. He turned himself into the reference point for the modern holding midfielder.
The path was not smooth. A serious knee injury ruled him out for much of the 2024-25 season, and a hamstring problem disrupted the following campaign. But when he returned to full fitness, he did it in style.
Rodri dominated the summer with Spain, lifting the World Cup and being named player of the tournament, having already taken the same award at the European Championship. That Euro triumph had propelled him to the 2024 Ballon d’Or, confirmation of his status as the outstanding midfielder of his generation.
Now Barcelona see him as a statement signing, a player capable of elevating Flick’s back-to-back Spanish champions from domestic power to something more ruthless and complete.
The question is no longer whether Rodri can carry a team. It is how far Barcelona can go with him at the centre of everything.
