Barcelona and Arsenal in Race for Julián Álvarez
Barcelona have walked onto Arsenal’s turf.
What had been a carefully managed pursuit of Julián Álvarez by Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta has suddenly turned into a three-way sprint, with Barcelona now preparing a formal offer and Paris Saint-Germain lurking with serious intent.
Arsenal’s long game under threat
Arsenal thought they were ahead of the curve. Back in January 2026, transfer insider Graeme Bailey revealed that the Gunners had already opened talks with Álvarez’s camp about a summer move from Atlético Madrid. The message from those early conversations was clear: the former Manchester City forward was listening.
Since then, Arsenal have only strengthened their hand. A Premier League title in the bag, a Champions League final against PSG on the horizon, and a project that increasingly sells itself to elite players. Inside the club, there is genuine belief they can lure Álvarez to the Emirates.
That confidence has not been baseless. Bailey reported on May 25 that Álvarez’s representatives had again informed Atlético that the striker wants to leave, and that both Arsenal and PSG “have received encouragement that Álvarez is open to their projects should Barcelona ultimately fail to make a viable move”.
That caveat now matters.
Barcelona make their move
Barcelona are no longer hovering in the background. They are at the table.
Fabrizio Romano revealed that the Catalan giants have held direct talks with Álvarez’s representatives and are preparing their first official bid. The proposal, he reported on X on May 28, will be sent “soon” and will not include any players going the other way. Cash only.
The key detail? Álvarez has already informed Atlético of his desire to leave after rejecting a new contract months ago. Barcelona sense an opening and are trying to drive through it before the market fully erupts.
Mundo Deportivo report that Barça met Álvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, at a Barcelona hotel on Wednesday afternoon, accompanied by Andy Bara from the same agency. Those close to the talks believe Barcelona’s historically strong relationship with Atlético could help unlock a deal that, on paper, looks anything but straightforward.
Sport add more colour: sporting director Deco also sat down with Hidalgo on Wednesday, with discussions stretching beyond four hours. From those talks, a structure has emerged. Barcelona intend to present an opening offer of around €90 million (£78m, $104.5m) plus bonuses.
It is a bold starting point. It is also some way short of Atlético’s stance.
Atlético dig in, market heats up
Sky Sports report that Atlético want €150m (£130m, $174m) for Álvarez. That figure underlines both his importance to Diego Simeone’s side and the level of demand for a striker who has already won almost everything there is to win.
Sources quoted by Sport are under no illusion: this will not be a quick or easy negotiation, “much less comparable to the recent Anthony Gordon transfer”. Atlético know they hold a premium asset. PSG are “determined to make a strong push”. Arsenal are “closely monitoring the situation”. Barcelona are trying to steal a march.
This is not a one-bid-and-done saga. This is brinkmanship.
A serial winner at the centre of it all
You can see why the scramble has started early.
Álvarez is not a prospect. He is a finished article at 26, with years still to give at the top. At Manchester City, he collected two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and a Champions League. With Argentina, he has a 2022 World Cup winner’s medal and back-to-back Copa América triumphs in 2021 and 2024.
He presses, he scores, he links play, he thrives under pressure. Clubs do not just buy his goals; they buy his habit of winning.
For Arsenal, he would be the statement centrepiece of a champion squad evolving into a dynasty. For Barcelona, he would be the next great No. 9 in a line that carries weight at Camp Nou. For PSG, he would be another marquee forward to drive their perennial Champions League obsession.
Who blinks first?
Right now, the numbers do not match. Atlético want €150m. Barcelona are preparing around €90m plus bonuses. PSG are ready to be aggressive. Arsenal, armed with a title and potentially a European crown, believe their project can sway the player if the finances stack up.
Álvarez has made one thing clear: he wants out of Atlético. The rest is a battle of nerve, money and timing.
One of Europe’s superclubs is about to land a serial winner in his prime. The only question is whose shirt he pulls on when the new season kicks off.
