Barcelona's Defensive Dilemma: Deco Seeks Experienced Centre-Back
Barcelona’s defensive plan has been ripped up and rewritten in a matter of weeks.
Ronald Araujo’s loan move to Liverpool has not only taken away Hansi Flick’s defensive leader, it has exposed just how thin Barcelona are at centre-back over the course of an entire 2026/27 season. Inside the club, that reality has hit hard.
Deco hunts experience, not another project
According to AS, sporting director Deco has thrown himself into the market, working intensely to secure an experienced, left-footed centre-back before the window closes. Not just any defender. A very specific profile: reliable, seasoned, comfortable on the left side, and affordable within Barça’s tight financial limits.
The message from the sporting department is clear. They don’t believe the current group is enough to carry them through a long campaign on multiple fronts without Araujo.
Right now, the first-team options in the heart of defence are Pau Cubarsí, Eric Garcia, Gerard Martin and Andreas Christensen. Quality, yes, but not a lot of margin for injuries, suspensions or simple fatigue. Rotation suddenly looks like a luxury rather than a strategy.
That’s why Deco is not chasing another young talent who needs time and patience. He wants someone who can walk through the door and compete for a place immediately.
Cortes at a crossroads
This push for experience has direct consequences for Alvaro Cortes.
Cortes is still seen as an option by Flick, but inside the club there are serious doubts about whether he is ready to handle the week‑in, week‑out pressure of being a regular first-team centre-back. Cover for the odd game is one thing; carrying a full season is another.
The situation is complicated further by the player’s own stance. Cortes no longer wants to return to Barça Atlètic and already has offers from elsewhere. A departure in the coming days is very much on the table.
If he goes, the gap at centre-back grows even wider. What is already a need turns into an urgent problem.
Targets ruled out by age and profile
Barcelona’s search has already brushed past several names.
Luka Vuskovic, now at Brighton, was admired by the club. His talent is not in question. But at 19, he simply does not fit what Deco is looking for right now. The same applies to Jon Martin of Real Sociedad. Barça like the defender, yet his age works against him for this specific, immediate requirement.
Even Cristian Romero, despite his proven quality and experience, has not been viewed as the perfect fit. The club are not just scanning the market for the best individual centre-back available; they are narrowing in on a particular mix of attributes, age, footedness and cost.
It leaves Barcelona in a delicate position: short at the back, tight on money, and committed to a very narrow profile. With the season stretching out ahead and Araujo in Liverpool red, Deco’s next move in the market will say a lot about how bold – or how exposed – Barça are willing to be.
