Barcelona's Defensive Search: No Move for Inácio
Barcelona’s search for defensive reinforcements has taken a clear turn – and it does not lead to Lisbon.
Ronald Araujo’s loan move to Liverpool opened a sizeable gap at the heart of Barça’s defence. The captain’s departure, after two turbulent seasons in Catalonia, gives him a fresh start in the Premier League and leaves the club with a major decision to make at centre-back.
A place is open. The need is obvious. But not for Gonçalo Inácio.
Inácio links shut down
In recent days, the Sporting CP defender’s name had been pushed towards Barcelona’s orbit. A left-footed centre-back, 24 years old, established in Portugal – on paper, he ticks several boxes for a club that suddenly looks light at the back.
Reality is different.
According to Fabrizio Romano, there are “zero” negotiations between Barcelona and Inácio. None. The club have denied that any operation is in progress, and internally he is not viewed as an active target.
That stance matters because Barcelona are still exploring the market for at least one more defender before the window closes. The need is genuine. The Inácio talk, though, is not.
Flick not sold – echoes of Romero
Romano also drew a direct parallel with previous rumours around Cristian Romero.
Barcelona were linked with the Argentine, but the move never advanced. Hansi Flick did not green-light the idea, and the club walked away. The same dynamic applies here.
Flick and the sporting department are aligned: they do not intend to pursue Inácio. For now, a deal is described as highly unlikely. The Portuguese international may have built a strong reputation in the Primeira Liga, but stepping into Barcelona’s defensive line is a different level of scrutiny and responsibility. The club are not convinced he is the right fit to make that leap in this moment.
Market still alive – and complicated
The decision on Inácio does not signal the end of Barcelona’s defensive plans. Far from it.
With roughly a week left before deadline day, the club are actively scanning the market. Centre-back remains a live issue, and the situation at left-back could soon add another layer.
Alejandro Balde is one more player who could yet leave before the window shuts. If that exit materialises, Barcelona will not only be short at centre-back after Araujo’s loan, but also exposed on the left side of defence.
That is shaping the profile Deco and his team are now prioritising: a left-footed central defender who can also operate at left-back. One signing, two roles covered. In a tight financial and time frame, versatility is not a luxury – it is a requirement.
Names will surface, rumours will swell, and some will be quickly dismissed, just as with Inácio. The clock is ticking, the gaps in the squad are clear, and Barcelona still have serious transfer business to complete before the window slams shut.
