Barcelona on Alert as Inzaghi Discusses Cancelo's Future

Simone Inzaghi needed only one line to light up Barcelona’s summer. Asked about Joao Cancelo on the eve of Al-Hilal’s league opener against Al-Faisaly, the Italian drew a sharp line: the full-back’s future is no longer his call. It now belongs to the club’s hierarchy.

Then came the second message, just as loud. Cancelo was left out of the squad for the first game of the season. No injury, no suspension. Just a clear footballing verdict: he is not part of Inzaghi’s immediate plans.

Speaking to Spanish newspaper Sport, Inzaghi laid it out: “Cancelo continues to train regularly with the team, but his future and whether he stays or not is a matter for the board of directors.” For Barcelona, that sounded like an invitation.

Barcelona see an opening

Inside the Camp Nou offices, the reaction was swift. Those words were interpreted as a green light to accelerate talks over Cancelo’s return, a move Hansi Flick has been pushing from day one.

Flick wants a full-back who can solve two problems at once. Cancelo can operate on the right, slide across to the left, and step into midfield when the game demands it. That versatility has made him one of the German coach’s top targets in this window.

The player has done little to hide where he wants to be. On Instagram last Friday, Cancelo posted a fresh Barcelona-related image on his Stories, his second public nod towards the Catalan club since last season ended. Subtle it was not.

The price jumps, the deal stalls

There was a moment when everything seemed aligned. Barcelona and Al-Hilal had edged towards an agreement around the 10 million euro mark. A manageable fee, a shared sense that a deal could be closed.

Then the number changed.

Saudi sources indicated Al-Hilal had raised their demands to 15 million euros for the 32-year-old. That five-million jump has chilled the negotiation. Barcelona are refusing to pay what they see as an inflated price in a tight financial landscape. Al-Hilal, for now, are unmoved.

The Saudi club also have their own timing. Before they let Cancelo walk, they want a replacement lined up. Until that happens, they can afford to sit and wait, with the defender still training and under contract.

Deco on the clock

All eyes now turn to Deco. The sporting director must find a way through a deal that has become more complex just as it looked close.

He needs a formula that trims the fee, satisfies Al-Hilal’s demands, and still delivers the full-back Flick is counting on. Loan structures, variables, instalments – everything is on the table, as long as the final number drops.

Barcelona know what Cancelo wants. They know what their coach wants. What they do not know yet is whether they can bend Al-Hilal’s stance enough to bring him back to Camp Nou without breaking their own rules on spending.
