Barcelona Prepares for La Liga Opener Under Hansi Flick
Barcelona believe the paperwork will not get in the way of their new era under Hansi Flick.
The club are increasingly confident that all of their major summer signings will be registered in time for Sunday’s 2026/27 La Liga curtain-raiser against Elche, with the process formally kicking off on Thursday.
Window opens for Flick’s new-look side
The administrative push starts today, giving Barcelona several days to navigate the final checks before Flick names his first competitive squad. Inside the club, the plan is simple: every new first-team reinforcement available from day one.
Barcelona are currently operating under La Liga’s 1:1 spending rule, a far more forgiving framework than the strict limits that strangled their transfer operations in recent seasons. It allows them to register new players as long as their incomings and outgoings balance, instead of wrestling with the harsher ratios that previously forced last-minute contortions.
That does not mean they can simply send a list of names to La Liga and walk away. Each registration must be backed by full sporting and financial documentation, from contract details to proof that the wage bill and amortisation fit within the league’s controls. The club want all of that wrapped up well before kick-off, rather than risking a frantic race against the clock on the eve of the match.
Rodri headlines a busy summer
Among the headline additions expected to be cleared are Rodri, Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi.
Rodri is viewed as the flagship signing of Barcelona’s summer, arriving from Manchester City on a deal running until 2030 and immediately reshaping the spine of Flick’s team. Gordon was the first operation Barcelona closed in this window, a move that set the tone for a more aggressive market strategy. Adeyemi followed as another key attacking option, adding pace and depth to the front line.
Hamza Abdelkarim is also in the plans after Barcelona activated their purchase option on the player. He will be part of the senior squad framework, while highly rated youngster Jesse Bisiwu is set to be registered with the reserve team but remain linked to the first-team dynamic, training and travelling when required.
The internal message is clear: Flick should have a full deck to play with against Elche.
Cancelo case drags into final days
There is, however, one exception.
Joao Cancelo, the last of the new faces to arrive, represents the most delicate registration case. His late signing has left Barcelona with a tighter window to complete the necessary procedures, and his availability for Sunday is not yet guaranteed.
The club still believe they can generate the required room through outgoing deals and salary adjustments, then finalise Cancelo’s registration without major drama. But unlike the rest of the new arrivals, his situation carries a sliver of uncertainty as the opener approaches.
Another file on the desk is Andreas Christensen, whose case also needs attention as Barcelona continue to align contracts and registrations with La Liga’s financial framework.
The clock is ticking, the paperwork is stacked, and Flick’s first competitive line-up as Barcelona coach is taking shape. The only real question left before Elche visit: will Joao Cancelo be on the teamsheet or watching the new project begin from the stands?
