Barcelona’s pursuit of Rodri is reaching its decisive stretch, with negotiations with Manchester City accelerating and the gap between the clubs narrowing by the hour.
Two bids from the Catalan side have already been turned down, City standing firm as they look to squeeze maximum value from one of their key assets. Barcelona have put a four-year contract on the table, offering the World Cup Golden Ball winner a net salary of €15 million per season. In Catalonia, once the taxman takes his share, that figure explodes to a gross cost of around €34 million per year. Over four seasons, that is €136 million in wages alone.
Add the transfer fee and commissions on top and the total climbs towards that €210 million mark – and may even go beyond it depending on how the final details are structured. For a club still wrestling with financial constraints, it is a bold, heavy swing at securing a midfield cornerstone.
Between England and Barcelona
Rodri’s own movements underline how delicate this stage of the saga has become.
Fresh from his post-World Cup holiday, the midfielder was recently spotted boarding a flight back to England, a clear sign that the deal is not yet sealed. The original idea inside Barcelona’s corridors was very different: they had hoped he would fly straight to Catalonia to start his new chapter.
He has, however, asked to skip training as talks between the two clubs intensify. That request hangs in the air as a symbol of the limbo he currently occupies. The next question is simple and telling: does he report for pre-season in England, or does the agreement land in time to change his destination?
