Barcelona's Renewed Pursuit of Julian Alvarez
Barcelona’s chase for Julian Alvarez is not dead. It might just be warming up for a winter twist.
Reports from El Chiringuito TV claim the Atletico Madrid striker’s camp believe the situation at the Metropolitano could deteriorate as the season unfolds, to the point where Atletico themselves might end up taking Alvarez to Barcelona’s door.
That is a very different picture to the one painted in August.
A transfer that never really went away
Alvarez was Barcelona’s chosen No.9 this summer. First choice. The player earmarked to lead the line and give their attack a sharper edge.
They tried to prise him away from Atletico and failed. The Madrid club held firm, treated the matter as closed and made it clear they were not entertaining a sale. For Atletico, Alvarez stayed, end of story.
Barcelona pivoted to Gabriel Jesus, brought in the Brazilian, and on the surface moved on.
But the story never quite disappeared. The interest in Alvarez did not evaporate with one failed bid or one alternative signing. It lingered, sitting in the background of Barcelona’s planning and Atletico’s season.
At the Metropolitano, they know it. Even while insisting the player is not for sale, Atletico accept that Alvarez’s future will be a recurring topic, whether he ultimately stays or forces a move.
Cracks in Atletico’s stance?
The new element is the belief from Alvarez’s camp that the current situation in Madrid may become “untenable” as the campaign progresses. No details, no public complaints, but a clear suggestion: something could give.
If that happens, the entire negotiating landscape shifts.
In the summer, Barcelona were trying to convince a club absolutely determined to keep their striker. Every conversation started from a position of refusal. Every euro had to be stretched, every argument sharpened.
January could look very different. If Atletico reach a point where they feel compelled to reconsider, they might be the ones opening the door. Instead of Barça banging on the wall, the wall could start to move.
And Barcelona are not powerless here. The club are understood to have around €60 million of Financial Fair Play margin available. That does not guarantee a deal of Alvarez’s scale, but it does give them the capacity to explore another major operation if the right opportunity appears.
Why Barça won’t let this go
Barcelona’s continued interest is straightforward. They identified Alvarez as the ideal centre-forward profile and nothing that has happened since has changed that technical assessment.
Signing Gabriel Jesus filled a need, but not necessarily the original vision. Alvarez still represents that plan: a long-term, high-ceiling No.9 to build around.
If Atletico’s resolve softens, Barcelona will not need a second invitation.
There is another layer, too. The potential involvement of intermediaries with ties to both clubs is expected to become important if the situation begins to move. Those figures can smooth conversations, test positions and accelerate talks once a crack appears in Atletico’s stance.
For now, it remains a scenario, not a concrete operation. No bid on the table, no agreement in place, just a possibility that refuses to die.
But if the season at the Metropolitano turns sour for Alvarez, and if Barcelona enter January with money to spend and a familiar name at the top of their list, the question will not be whether they are interested.
It will be how hard they are prepared to push this time.
