Barcelona Sells Jofre Torrents to Ajax for €6 Million
FC Barcelona have agreed the sale of Jofre Torrents to Ajax for around €6 million, including fixed fees and variables, with the Catalan club retaining 50% of the player’s rights, according to SPORT.
The 19-year-old full-back is set to sign a four-year contract with the Dutch giants and begin his first adventure away from Spanish football.
Deal sealed on Thursday night
The operation was wrapped up on Thursday night, when the two clubs signed the transfer documents and closed a negotiation that Barcelona saw as both a financial opportunity and a way to trim the squad.
Torrents is now waiting for Barcelona’s final authorisation to travel to Amsterdam. If the green light arrives in the coming hours, he will immediately undergo his medical and sign his new contract. If not, his trip will be pushed back to Sunday.
In that case, the defender would be in the stands to watch his new teammates host Heerenveen on Sunday at 16:45 in the second round of the Eredivisie, before completing his medical on Monday.
From La Masia to Amsterdam
For Torrents, this move closes a long chapter at Barcelona. He joined La Masia in 2017 at just ten years old and climbed through the youth ranks until breaking into the first team last season, when he made four official appearances.
He also featured in pre-season this summer, playing in friendlies against CE Europa and Birmingham City as he tried to convince the new coaching staff.
Now he heads to a club that has built its identity on young talent. Ajax will demand immediate competitiveness from him as he battles for minutes at left-back with Caio Henrique, who arrived earlier in the window for €10 million. The competition will be fierce. That is exactly the environment Ajax expect him to grow in.
Deco’s clear-out continues
Torrents’ sale is another step in Deco’s drive to slim down Barcelona’s squad before the transfer window closes. The sporting director has been working to offload players who are not in Hansi Flick’s plans, and the academy is feeling the shake-up.
