Barcelona Signs Gabriel Jesus for 10 Million Euros
Barcelona finally have Gabriel Jesus. Years after first circling his name, the Catalan club have landed the Arsenal forward in a late, unexpected move, paying 10 million euros to bring him to the Camp Nou.
It comes at the end of a window in which everything pointed the other way. Barça had been preparing to close the market without a new striker, blocked in their attempt to sign Julián Álvarez after Atlético de Madrid refused to even sit down at the table. The deal for Gabriel Jesus burst through that dead end at the last minute, changing the script in a matter of hours.
This is not a new obsession in Barcelona’s offices. The Brazilian has been on the club’s radar for almost a decade.
The one that got away in 2016
Barça’s first serious move for Gabriel Jesus dates back to 2016, when he was exploding at Palmeiras and already drawing attention with the Brazilian national team. Robert Fernández, then sporting director, flew to Brazil to see him live. He wasn’t alone.
Europe’s giants had spotted the same thing. The race for his signature was fierce, and the young forward hesitated over his next step. Barcelona, though, believed they had a trump card.
They played the Neymar card.
Both Neymar and Gabriel Jesus were part of the Brazil squad preparing for the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. During that camp, the then Barça star took on the role of recruiter, trying to pull his international teammate towards Catalonia. Gabriel Jesus himself later admitted as much in an interview.
“Neymar knows what it’s like to be young and have several European clubs want you,” Gabriel Jesus recalled. “He told me about what Barcelona was like, about the city. And he told me the climate is similar to Brazil’s. He made me hesitate because Barça is also a great club, but I realized that I could go to another big club with more chances to play.”
For a moment, Barcelona’s pitch worked. The city, the style, the presence of Neymar — all of it weighed heavily. But another voice would prove decisive.
Pep’s phone call that changed everything
The “other big club” he mentioned was Manchester City. And the key difference was not a brochure or a project document. It was a phone call.
Pep Guardiola picked up the phone and spoke directly to the young Brazilian. That conversation tipped the balance. “I saw that City was really interested in me after speaking with Pep on the phone,” Gabriel Jesus said.
Barcelona’s interest, Neymar’s persuasion, the climate, the city — all of it fell short against the pull of Guardiola’s project and the promise of minutes in England. Gabriel Jesus chose City, and Barça were left watching him develop from afar.
Now, years later, the path finally converges. The forward who once slipped through their fingers arrives in Barcelona for 10 million euros, in a deal few expected to materialize so late. The courtship has been long. The question now is simple: can he deliver the goals that once made the club chase him all the way to Brazil?
