Barcelona Targets Castello Lukeba for Centre-Back Rebuild
Barcelona’s search for a new centre-back has finally moved from background noise to concrete action.
A defensive signing sits near the top of the club’s summer agenda, yet until now it has been the area with the least visible progress. Names have floated around the Camp Nou offices for weeks — Aymeric Laporte, Alessandro Bastoni, Castello Lukeba, even Cristian Romero — but none of those trails had truly heated up.
That picture is starting to change.
Direct line to Leipzig
According to SPORT, Barcelona have opened talks with RB Leipzig to ask about Castello Lukeba’s situation and potential price tag. The 21-year-old, a left-footed centre-back, ticks several boxes for the Catalan club and has been on internal lists for some time.
Deco and Hansi Flick are both strong admirers. Inside the sporting department, Lukeba is viewed as one of the standout young centre-backs in Europe, a defender who can grow into a long-term pillar of the back line rather than a short-term patch.
The Frenchman already has interest from the Premier League and multiple options on the table, yet he remains in the Bundesliga for now. A move to Barcelona, though, is said to attract him, and he is open to making the step if the clubs can find an agreement.
Lukeba’s current market value is around €30 million, and Barcelona have called Leipzig to gauge not just his availability, but the kind of fee the German side would demand to let him go.
Araujo gone, Kounde in the spotlight
The urgency behind this operation is clear. Ronald Araujo has already left Barcelona for Liverpool, ripping out a cornerstone of the defence and leaving the centre-back department exposed.
The club see reinforcing that area as a priority, not a luxury.
Yet the key to how far they push for Lukeba may lie with another French defender: Jules Kounde. The versatile full-back has offers on the table, and a departure is not being dismissed inside the club.
If Kounde leaves, Barcelona’s stance changes. A major sale would open the door to a more expensive, top-tier defensive signing, potentially altering the profile of player they go all-in for this summer.
For now, though, Lukeba sits near the top of the list. Flick is not convinced by some of the other options that have been floated, such as Bastoni and Romero, which only strengthens the Leipzig defender’s position in the internal debates. Alongside Laporte, he stands out as one of the most realistic and appealing solutions.
Barcelona have made their first move. The next one may depend on what happens with Kounde — and how far they are willing to go to rebuild the heart of their defence.
