Barcelona's Transfer Window Strategy: Mendes' Key Role
The transfer window is heading into its final stretch, and Barcelona are moving from planning to action.
With just over ten days left before the market closes, the club are pushing hard on two fronts: clearing out space in the squad and on the wage bill, and landing the centre-forward Hansi Flick has been asking for since he walked through the door.
At the heart of it all, once again, is Jorge Mendes.
Mendes lands in Barcelona
According to SPORT, the Portuguese super-agent is due in Barcelona around midday for a series of meetings that could unlock several stalled operations.
Top of his list is a familiar face. Joao Cancelo is back on the agenda, and this time the deal is described as virtually complete. Mendes is expected to be present for the final touches of the agreement, with the club preparing to announce the defender’s signing shortly after everything is signed off.
The plan is straightforward: close the last contractual details, confirm the transfer, then move straight into the presentation phase in front of the fans and media, where Mendes is also expected to appear.
But Cancelo is only the opening act.
Casado, exits and the numbers game
Mendes’ visit is also about shaping Barcelona’s wider transfer strategy in the final days of the window. Meetings with sporting director Deco and president Joan Laporta are on the agenda, and one name will feature prominently: Marc Casado.
Inside the club, there is a growing expectation that Casado will leave before the window shuts. The route out is still unclear — destination and final fee remain open — but the direction of travel is set.
After being heavily involved in the operations around Cancelo and Karim Adeyemi earlier in the summer, Mendes now wants to assist Barcelona again, this time with the future of the La Masia midfielder.
As reported, he will arrive with a portfolio of offers for Casado, who is considered one of the most likely departures in this late phase of the market. Barcelona have placed a high valuation on their academy product and now want to see, in black and white, how far interested clubs are willing to go.
Those figures matter. Casado’s sale could be key in freeing both financial margin and a squad slot, two conditions the club need to meet if they are to attack the final days of the window with any real force.
Final push for Flick’s No. 9
The calendar adds urgency. With the deadline looming, Barcelona expect an intense spell of negotiations behind the scenes, with Mendes at the centre of several of them.
The objective is clear: accelerate outgoing deals, lock in the Cancelo operation, and then turn fully towards the signing of the centre-forward Flick believes is essential to complete his squad.
Barcelona know the clock is ticking. The question now is whether Mendes’ latest visit can turn pressure into concrete business before the window slams shut.
