Barcelona Break WSL Transfer Record for Kerolin Nicoli
Barcelona have made their clearest statement of the summer, prising Brazilian forward Kerolin Nicoli from Manchester City for a reported £1.25m, according to Sky Sports – the highest fee ever received for a Women's Super League player and a new benchmark for the English game’s exports.
It is a breathtaking rise. Kerolin only set foot in the WSL 18 months ago, arriving from the NWSL in January 2025. By the end of the 2025-26 campaign, she had 26 league appearances, 12 goals and a central role in City’s first WSL title in a decade. Now she leaves as the league’s most expensive outbound transfer.
From São Paulo asphalt to Camp Nou lights
Kerolin’s journey has never followed the academy brochure. She learned football barefoot on the streets of São Paulo, battling boys, bouncing off concrete and challenges alike. That upbringing forged the relentless, combative edge that has carried her from Brazil to the NWSL, then to Manchester, and now to the Camp Nou.
Arsenal had chased her before she chose City. That decision looked bold at the time; in hindsight, it feels like a stepping stone. Her impact in England was so immediate, so forceful, that a move to one of Europe’s giants always felt like a matter of when, not if.
Barcelona have answered that question emphatically.
A fee that rewrites Barcelona’s own rules
The £1.25m deal eclipses the record set only last summer, when Olivia Smith moved from Liverpool to Arsenal. It also tears up Barcelona’s traditional approach to spending. The four-time European champions had never previously gone beyond the £500k mark for a single player. They have now more than doubled it.
The context is impossible to ignore. This is a club in transition, not crisis, but certainly at a crossroads. Alexia Putellas, Ona Batlle and Mapi León have all departed. Salma Paralluelo has gone too, leaving a glaring vacancy: a forward who can hurt teams from either flank, score, create, and stretch defences with raw pace.
Kerolin drops straight into that silhouette.
Only Khadija Shaw and Stina Blackstenius posted a better goals-per-90 record than her in England last season. No WSL player attempted or completed more take-ons. She doesn’t just carry the ball; she drags entire back lines out of shape.
Barcelona have built their recent dominance on that kind of individual brilliance. Each of the last five Ballon d'Or winners was wearing their shirt at the time, per Sky Sports. Kerolin now joins current holder Aitana Bonmatí in a squad being carefully remodelled by Pere Romeu rather than ripped apart.

What it means for Manchester City
For City, the move brings a sizeable financial return on a player they signed only a year and a half ago. It also clears a lane in a crowded attacking department.
Aoba Fujino, Mary Fowler, Iman Beney and new arrival Beth Mead all stand to benefit. One of them, perhaps more than one, will now be asked to step into the void Kerolin leaves on the wing and in the dressing room.
City lose a driving force, but they gain flexibility and funds at a time when the women’s transfer market is accelerating fast.
Barcelona, meanwhile, have paid a record fee to bet on a forward who went from barefoot in São Paulo to breaking records in England in just a few years.
