Barcelona's Pursuit of Julian Alvarez Continues
Barcelona’s chase for Julian Alvarez is not over. It’s only been delayed.
According to SPORT, the Catalan club are already plotting a fresh move for the Argentine forward in January, undeterred by their failure to land him from Atletico Madrid in the summer. Atletico refused to even sit at the table. Barcelona backed off rather than force a confrontation, but they never cooled on the player.
They chose to wait, not to walk away.
Jesus in, but Alvarez still the target
The signing of Gabriel Jesus might have looked like the end of the Alvarez story. Inside Barcelona, it is nothing of the sort.
Jesus arrived to plug an immediate gap in attack, a short-term fix for a frontline that needed a different profile and more depth. Alvarez, in the eyes of the club, sits in another category entirely: a strategic opportunity rather than a stopgap.
That distinction matters. It means Jesus’ presence does not automatically block another major outlay in the forward line. If the right deal emerges for Alvarez, Barcelona want to be ready to strike.
SPORT report that Barça could have around €65–70 million of financial fair play room available in January. That figure gives them the flexibility to reopen talks for Alvarez if Atletico’s stance softens, or to pivot and strengthen elsewhere if Hansi Flick decides another area needs urgent attention.
Centre-back is the other position under consideration. Any move there will depend on Flick’s assessment of his defensive options over the coming months. For now, though, Alvarez remains the name underlined in red.
A tense autumn for Alvarez at Atletico
If the roadmap looks relatively clear for Barcelona, it is far more tangled on the player’s side.
Alvarez chose to stay at the Metropolitano, but his relationship with sections of the Atletico support has already taken damage. The flirtation with Barcelona has not been forgotten. When he steps back out at the Metropolitano, the welcome may be icy, if not openly hostile.
There has even been talk around the club of Atletico wanting him to issue a public apology to fans and to change his agent after the summer saga. At this stage, neither demand seems close to becoming reality, yet their mere existence shows how delicate the situation has become.
Alvarez now enters a critical four-month stretch. Every performance, every interaction with Diego Simeone, every reaction from the stands will feed into the narrative that surrounds him heading into January.
If he wins the fans back and reaffirms his importance to Simeone, Atletico’s resolve will harden. If the tension lingers, the door that Barcelona are patiently waiting by might just swing open.
