Bayern Munich and Florian Wirtz: Latest Transfer Rumors
Bayern Munich have been dragged back into the Florian Wirtz story. This time, the answer from Germany is blunt: not now.
The Liverpool playmaker, signed for around £116m from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025 after a fierce battle with Bayern Munich and Manchester City, has not yet become the Premier League sensation many expected. The talent is obvious. The adaptation has been brutal.
Wirtz arrived on Merseyside as one of Europe’s most coveted attacking midfielders, a creative force who lit up the Bundesliga with Leverkusen. At Liverpool, he has had to fight with the pace and physicality of English football, and his form has been scrutinised almost weekly. That tension has naturally reignited talk of a Bayern rescue mission.
Not this time, says Christian Falk.
Bayern shut down ‘shock move’ talk
The well-connected German reporter has poured cold water on claims that Bayern are actively working on a surprise swoop for the 21-year-old.
“It is NOT TRUE: Bayern Munich are tracking Florian Wirtz and could make a shock move for the Liverpool player. My information is that this is not true,” Falk told CF Bayern Insider.
The denial matters because the links are not fantasy. Bayern and Wirtz share a real backstory. Before he chose Liverpool, there were two “secret meetings” – one in Munich, one in Liverpool – as the Bundesliga champions tried to lure him back to Germany. In the end, it was Arne Slot who convinced the Germany international to commit to Anfield.
That history means any wobble in Wirtz’s form, any hint of uncertainty at Liverpool, instantly sparks rumours. Falk acknowledges the noise, but he is not buying the idea that Wirtz is flopping.
“To be clear, I don’t necessarily share those concerns; I think Wirtz is performing better than he did last year. He has a new position in the team,” he explained.
The context in Munich is just as important. Jamal Musiala, usually the face of Bayern’s attacking future, has not been at his sharpest, still feeling the effects of illness after last season’s injury problems. That alone could have opened the door for more Wirtz speculation. Instead, Falk insists there is “nothing planned” between Bayern and the Liverpool man.
Swap whispers: Wirtz, Olise and a web of possibilities
The story doesn’t end with a simple no. It rarely does at this level.
While Falk is clear that Bayern are not currently pursuing Wirtz, he stops short of dismissing the idea that Michael Olise could one day be part of a complex swap scenario involving the German.
Reports have floated the prospect of Wirtz heading to Bavaria with Olise moving the other way. On paper, it sounds like a Football Manager fever dream. In reality, Falk stresses that a lot would have to fall into place.
“So, you can see where some reports have taken these conditions and claimed that one plus one equals two,” he said. “Of course, if Florian Wirtz were, at some point in future, interested in making a return to the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich would be the first team he’d talk to. However, there is nothing planned.”
Bayern’s current situation backs that up. Vincent Kompany has a large, confident squad and is trialling a new system with Olise operating as the central fulcrum – the same role he fills for the French national team. Musiala remains tied down to a long contract. Options in attacking midfield are not in short supply.
And then there is the price. Liverpool paid huge money for Wirtz. Any move would demand either a major fee or a heavyweight piece heading the other way.
That is where Olise re-enters the frame.
On a potential swap, Falk outlined the scenario: “Everyone is hoping the former Crystal Palace star signs a new contract, but if not, and he decides for a transfer, of course Florian Wirtz would be a player who’s interesting for Bayern Munich.
“The German can play on the side or centrally. This would be a very interesting thing, and if you make a swap deal with Liverpool or sell Olise for a lot of money to Real Madrid, you have the money to make an offer for Wirtz.
“So, there are many, many positions which have to be discussed. I wouldn’t say it’s not true that Bayern Munich would have thought of that.”
Right now, then, Bayern are not knocking on Liverpool’s door for Wirtz. But the relationships, the past meetings, the tactical fits and the financial weight of his fee all sit there in the background, waiting for the next twist in a transfer saga that refuses to fully disappear.
