Bordeaux's Fall to Sixth Tier Confirmed by Paris Court

Girondins de Bordeaux, one of French football’s great old names, has been formally kicked out of the national pyramid. The Paris Administrative Court has upheld the French Football Federation’s (FFF) sanction, confirming the club’s definitive exclusion from the national championships and sending it down to Régional 1, the sixth tier of the game in France.

No reprieve. No late escape.

Failed rescue, brutal verdict

This ruling closes the door on a turbulent year marked by bankruptcy proceedings in 2024 and the loss of professional status. The club’s former owner, Gérard López, had already walked away, selling his shares to Sparta Capital for a symbolic one euro in a desperate attempt to keep Bordeaux alive.

Sparta Capital arrived with a plan and a promise: a 10.6 million euro investment to tackle the debts and stabilise the club. It was presented as a lifeline, a final route back to the professional game.

The court did not bite. It backed the FFF’s disciplinary decision and left the rescue package powerless against the regulatory hammer.

A giant starting again in the shadows

With this judgment, Bordeaux will now be forced to restart from amateur football, entirely outside the professional divisions for the 2026-2027 season. A club that once fought for titles in Ligue 1 and played European nights will be travelling to small regional grounds, rebuilding from the bottom.

The badge is the same. The reality could not be further from what this institution once represented.
