Bournemouth vs Liverpool: Can Cherries Stun Reds Again?
Bournemouth have stumbled out of the blocks under Marco Rose, but this weekend offers a familiar jolt of jeopardy at the Vitality Stadium. Liverpool are in town. And so is their old boss, Andoni Iraola, now trying to steady the Reds in his own early-season storm.
On paper, it looks like a mismatch. In reality, it rarely is.
Stuttering starts on both benches
Four league games in, Bournemouth are still chasing their first Premier League win. The Cherries sit 15th, too close to the bottom for comfort, and every dropped point nudges the anxiety levels up a notch. Isak’s moment?
Alexander Isak has been simmering. Now he looks ready to boil.
The Liverpool striker was kept fresh in midweek, limited to just four minutes in the League Cup win over Tottenham. That rest feels deliberate with Bournemouth in mind, even if his personal record against the Cherries is underwhelming – one goal in four appearances.
This, though, is his first crack at them in a Liverpool shirt, with a side built to feed him. He has three goals in his last three league games, carrying half of Liverpool’s total Premier League output on his own. Only Erling Haaland sits above him in the early Golden Boot race, and that’s after Isak scored just four times in 22 league appearances last season.
The turnaround has been sharp. The underlying numbers back it up. He ranks fourth in the league for shots on target with six, and Bournemouth’s defence has allowed opponents to convert 16.67% of their shots – a figure bettered only by Manchester United for generosity.
Give Isak that kind of room, and he usually makes it count.

Vitality factor: Bournemouth won’t roll over
Liverpool’s unbeaten tag sounds impressive until you scratch the surface: three wins and three draws in all competitions, with three of those stalemates coming in the league. The goalless draw at home to Fulham last weekend underlined the sense of a team still finding its rhythm under Iraola.
Bournemouth, for all their issues, are awkward hosts. Both of their home league games this season – against Brentford and Everton – finished level. They may be winless, but they are not soft touches on their own patch.
History adds another twist. Last season, Bournemouth beat Liverpool 3-2 at the Vitality Stadium, with Iraola in the home dugout. Before that upset, Liverpool had rattled off six straight wins in this fixture, but that streak snapped in dramatic fashion and exposed the Reds’ vulnerability away from home in transition.
This Liverpool side remains in that in-between phase. Dangerous, yes. Dominant, no. Bournemouth, backed by a home crowd that has seen them bloody this nose before, will fancy they can dig in, punch back and stretch Liverpool’s run of draws.
